English reading and writing lessons for children

Hi there,

I am really struggling to find anyone (group or private) who teaches reading and writing to children (5yrs) in the Zurich city area.

I have 2 younger children and between the kindergarten/krippe and 3 hourly feeds I am not able to trek out to the WAC in Uster or down the coast to one of the private kindergartens that offer weekly classes.

We do read at home and practice letters and shapes, but just like I was when my mother tried to teach me to drive, my son is not so "amenable" to my style of teaching! Sometimes a third person is needed - someone who is not mummy or daddy

Is there really no-one offering classes in central zurich?

I would appreciate any help or suggestions....

Re: English reading and writing lessons for children

Hi, I know that Children First (childrenfirst.ch) offer kindergarten classes in the afternoon, and I assume they are readiing and writing in English, but you would have to check. I also don't know what kind of commitment they want, either, in terms of how many days etc. But could be worth a look. They are very close to Kreuzplatz.

Depending on where you live the WAC could be a good option. I get the train out there twice a week (once for German class for me, with childcare) and once for preschool for my daughter, and by train it's ten minutes then a walk of a few minutes. But I know it all depends on timing and all the other things you have to juggle!

Hiya!

I may be able to help...I have recently moved to Switzerland from the UK and although I am not a qualified teacher, I am currently teaching a 7 year old Swiss boy English for one afternoon a week. His family pay me 25CHF an hour and also my train fare from Bern to their home.

If you are interested in something similar for your son, let me know!

Re: English reading and writing lessons for children

I would suggest Karen Mortons group called "Little Poppets" in Ehrendingen. People from ZH come here. The school year starts in August, but you could give her a call to discuss as a new girl did start a few weeks ago.
They teach kids aged 5 to 12 I think. Reading and writing classes. My 5 year old has been going there for just over a year.

Hi Max

I know exactly what you mean about your son - I am currently teaching my almost 5 yr old daughter to read, which is going MUCH better than it would ever have done with my 'yeah, yeah, I know all that already, boring, boring, can I go now?' son.

But just in case it's of use to you, or to anyone else you round up to help with the actual teaching, here's a post I did about the teaching resources I'm using with my kids:

Teaching/ improving kids' reading in English

Best of luck.

Re: English reading and writing lessons for children

Hello,

Firstly I would be more than happy to help people who are looking for an English teacher for their children. I am located in Luzern. I am a qualified English Teacher and still completing my Bachelor of Education for Primary School Students.

Secondly I have had a family with two young children, the girl is in grade 3 and the boy grade 2 request I give them private lessons once a week. Can someone please give me a rough idea of a reasonable hourly rate?

Kind regards,

Charde

Re: English reading and writing lessons for children

It depents on what you like to earn net

A full time teacher job is 39 Weeks by 28 lessons a week. So for a year its 1092 lessons.

If you like to earn 50K as a salary then its

50 000 / 1092 = CHF 45.-- a lesson.

As you will have to register with AHV to be self employed count with an additional 5% of the amount - so CHF 2.25 per lesson. Next you will have to do bookkeeping for your tax papers and you will have expenses for telephone bank account a.s.o. So it’s up to you how much you count for that.

From the adult education association the recommendation is CHF 120.-- to 250.-- per hour for teaching to cover all expenses as a private teacher. But language courses will be lower as there are many who can do it. So most private school have rates of CHF 80.-- to CHF 100.-- per lesson.

@Maxhd

Did you manage to find a reading and writing class? Maybe I could help you or anyone else interested in tuition in English. I am a UK qualified teacher (QTS) and I am also TEFL registered. I am currently tutoring privately in Zurich.

PM me for further info.
