Re: Intensive German Class in Zurich

This wasn't in London or Zürich, but I just finished a week-long intensive course (40 x 40 minutes) at Education First (EF -- not to be confused with the English Forum), in Münich. I had a base of pratically zero German. Very good course, although, well, intensive!

Münich is only about 2.5 hours from Zürich by car (autobahns!). By train it takes a lot longer, maybe 5.5 hours?

It's very expensive, but my company was paying ...

If your company will pay for accommodation, then you're sorted. If not, you can stay with a host family for the bargain price of 170 euros (dinner, bed and breakfast) for the entire week, Sunday to Saturday.

Re: Intensive German Class in Zurich

I took my intensive German classes at Alpha Sprachstudio. But it was longer than a week. It is a good school. They have good teachers and methodology. Centrally located(next to the Stadelhofen train station).

My company send our foreign employees (those entitled to company paid language lessons) to this school to learn German.

I answered this in another thread....... but just want to re-post here too because it's helpful. I am attending Hallo Deutschschule in Zurich.... 2 hr intensive course M-F . Courses start at 490 CHF per month.

It is a privately owned school created by German young teacher teachers. They wrote their own course books for A1 levels with materials. I am on A2 now and the course book, although not written by the owners is also very practical and easy to follow.
I have never learned so quickly especially the grammar bits when it gets to Dative, prepositions and adjective declinations.
The two teachers I have had, Christina and Sonja are incredibly good at explaining Grammar and breaking it down. Dealing with administration and reception is always a pleasure--- super friendly and informative! Highly recommend!

Re: Intensive German Class in Zurich

Anybody tried LSI Sprachschule in Zürich?

https://www.lsizh.ch/de/sprachschule-zuerich

They propose a combination of group (20-30h per week) + private (5-10h per week) lessons. I think this can be quite beneficial, as in the group lesson the teacher cannot address the weak points of everyone, but fully private lessons on the other hand are too expensive.

Nice idea but wrong time allocation in my view. There's definitely no need to spend 5-10 hours with a private tutor.

Go to a school where you spend 20 hours per week with a small group. 6 or less. Speak as much as you can within the class because this is the time where you will speak with others who are confined to the same grammar structure and vocabulary as you.

If you are at A1/A2 time is your main friend.. Put time into learning words. There's plenty of good material on youtube that explains basic grammar. That's all that is needed.

From B1 a private tutor is not a bad idea but I would suggest 1-2 hours per week is more than enough. Certain things will just go over your head, I used a tutor to understand these gaps. I showed him what I couldn't understand, he clarified and gave me extra homework. The European language framework is designed so anyone can learn, the downfall is that the blocks aren't always well linked. A private tutor will help a student to link the grammar cases to each other rather than learning them as a standalone case.

Send me a pm if you would like the details of the tutor that I used.
