A recommendation for a shipping company

I recently had an excellent experience with Excess Baggage (www.excess-baggage.com). They are out of the UK, but arranged my shipping of a large proportion of my household good from Switzerland to the US, five boxes, about 70kg total, for a bit over 500CHF. I e-mailed the forms Monday, the boxes were picked up (by DHL) on Wednesday, and Friday they were at my new home in the US. I was really impressed by their speedy and excellent service, for a very fair price. I think they ship almost anywhere, so if you are looking to send too much to just take to the post, and not enough for a container, I recommend looking into their services.

Re: A recommendation for a shipping company

Would it have been cheaper to use DHL directly, cutting out the middle-man?

Re: A recommendation for a shipping company

Wow thanks. It's a bit odd, but DHL told me they only work for companies and no privat persons. (I only have 6 boxes and a few guitars. )
I called a few companies but the cheapest (for ONLY the boxes) was around 2000.- CHF from Bern to London!

Are you intending to bring the guitars with you on the plane? Remember this guy?

Has anybody taken his bicycle on the plane? I will try it at the end of the month, I have already booked a ticket and they told that it will be ok.

Depends on which part of DHL you ask. DHL Express (the courier part) does indeed work for private persons, while DHL Global Forwarding (Freight Forwarding) only works for companies.

I've previously transported a bike (in a good cardboard bicycle box, with quite a bit of extra clothes and gear tucked in). Used to be they never even asked, as long as the weight was less than the allowance. If they did, I was told that implying the contents are artist's equipment - stand, stretched canvas, so on - might help.

Some airlines have started tightening the screw and inventing new size restrictions, though, need to make sure that doesn't get you. I'm personally very irritated with one that has set the maximum total extent limit (width + height + depth) to 160cm to make sure everyone flying for a ski/snowboard vacation pays an extra 100€. (Finnair, looking at you here. Shame.)

Re: A recommendation for a shipping company

In case anyone cared or searched, its been miserable for me to get a quote to get out of switzerland with 10m3. I'm moving to Denmark...regardless, this Danish company quoted me 13000dkk for a full move abt 2400usd or so.

Re: A recommendation for a shipping company

I recently found a website called UShip.com which gets you automated quotes on shipping various types of things. Might be worth a try to find a price comparison
