Spain is a great place to live (which part are you in?) and I would happily go back and live there again, which says a lot as satisfying me is no mean feat. | | | | | Would you still say that given the 20% rate of unemployment, and the general socio-economic demise in Spain right now? |

I assume that Nil et al have a reason for moving to Spain (i.e. a job) and they're not just doing it on a whim. | The following 2 users would like to thank Kamarate for this useful post:

Barcelona is a very nice city. I just wonder how Spain has changed given the socio-economic climate there.

I think that a huge population of those living in Barcelona don't consider themselves "Spanish" in the traditional sense anyway.
rfk, you could ask the same of any country. Unemployment rates are soaring in many countries, it's nothing specific to Spain. Perhaps it's not a good idea to stress out someone who's just moved to a country they don't know when chances are they'll settle in perfectly well because the people are friendly and welcoming towards foreigners (in my experience). I'm not exactly sure what you hope to achieve with your posts, or are you being argumentative because it's Saturday night and you've got nowhere to go? (Much the same as me... boo hoo).

I do hate to repeat myself but... I don't give a f***.
Spain is brill, anyway. If you have any savings from Switzerland, you'll very much enjoy the amount you can get for your money. The people are fantastic, every region is completely different, it's just wonderful (can you tell I loved living there?). Enjoy, don't stress out too much, and eat a load of lomo for me.

God bless you and your family .. and all the best.
I left Swissieland a few months ago, and I miss some of my friends, but not much else.
And I live a few minutes from a KFC and a grocery store that's open until 10 PM most nights, so life ain't bad.
You'll be fine. Enjoy the vida loca. And you can always come back to visit.

(Much the same as me... boo hoo). | | | | | People are very nice here. I got plenty of smile already and with a little of bad spanish, I got plenty of help and people are just very happy to talk to us in english or french. They are genuinely interested to help us, they give us tips and advice to where to go, what to look for, which neighbourhood, etc. I got today two phone numbers from locals (just like that) if we have any questions, to call them, they will help us.
In the Subway, many people are giving their seats to me (with babish in the sling) which never happened to me while I was heavily pregnant in CH.
Strange schedule to ajust here. Shops open around 10h am until 14h and close to re-open at 16h to 20h.
So much clothes, so much styles, so much choices and so good price... Amen! | The following 3 users would like to thank Nil for this useful post:

| | Re: The after Switzerland | Quote: | | | | | I have been saying to my husband since a long time already that we are very very spoiled in Switzerland (green, clean, organised, quiet, etc...) and it will be difficult to ajust to a new place when we will move.
All those things that annoyed me became so normal that I find myself being now somehow Swissified.
So being tired after a very emotional last few months, a very fast and sudden move and being pitched in a city and country I have never been before, I feel overwhelmed.
Like most people do when moving to Switzerland, I also find myself comparing my new homeland with the previous one, Switzerland.
A temporary appartment doesn't help to make you feel at home and it isn't an easy transition, it actually make it more difficult when you don't have all your personal stuff with you.
I am back in the newbie position of insecurity, stress and doubts (if we made the good decision, etc) I left all my dear friends behind (as my husband and daughter did too) and it feels like a panic feeling when I stop a moment to think about it.
So please guys, remember we all been newbies when we left our home to a new adventure. Remember all those feelings you had to deal with when you arrived.
Be kind to the newbies who come here with all those questions answered a billions of time already. Even when the questions sound completely silly.

Just go to the window and try wagging your finger?
On second thoughts they won't pay any heed, or worse you might lose that seat on the metro or bus or wherever for being really, really weird.

Nil, I am sure that Barcelona will appeal to your artistic side and lift your spirits, even if the economic situation in Spain as a whole is not brilliant, I get the impression that Barcelona is one of the places where it's better than others. All the best.

Oooo Barcelona... me encanta!
Of course learning Spanish will be highly beneficial, but it wouldn't hurt for you to learn a few useful phrases in Catalan, too. They'll really appreciate it. I'm also jealous, Barcelona is one of my favourite places ever.

I think that you are probably in one of the best cities in Europe being in Barcelona.
When ever I talk to executives about the best city breaks they have had; the majority put Barcelona on the top of the list.
However, I do understand that there seems to be quite a lot of mugging and pick-pocketing going on in Barcelona.
