Shipping with DHL

So i just spoke with DHL about sending 14 boxes of my books, cd's and personal stuff to England from Switzerland. They confused me somewhat!!!

Firstly asking about the value and that I would have to pay a certain amount for customs to get it into the UK. Can anyone explain how that works???
I was quoted 800 Sfr but if I have to keep paying on top of that, it starts to get expensive.

My flatmates moved their boxes back to Denmark for a low price and didn't seem to have any of this trouble.

Please help!!!
