I couldn't find a good forum either in Barcelona. So it makes things so much more difficult to find informations...

Sigh!

Indeed, forums and its users are great to have when you walk into a country .. even i am a local here but after 8 years many things changed so i have to run up and down to find things out .. there is no one click page like EF

Message to editor bob, setup a general forum that include different countries..it would help allot

It is a complicated situation guys, not only the fact that I will be able to get brown sugar ...My job is getting very monotonous and I have no chance of training (like, at all) and I am upset because both our request for adoption and the study visa for my brother were denied, hence I am not very hapy with the Swiss government...
ugh...I am so sorry to hear that Angela. I cant imagine the disappointment and frustration.

Rather than uprooting yourself and moving countries, any chance of changing jobs within Switzerland? I am sure being rejected on both occasions is a bitter pill to swallow but dont let these 2 incidents get in the way of your quality of life here.

AFAIK, there arent really any sites equivalent to this one in terms of community spirit and the sheer amount of information. There were a couple of expat websites in Holland - namely expatica but posters on there were so negative and vicious - just ready to slag off the Dutch at any given chance. Newbies were demoralised when they try to ask questions. You'd get answers like "dont bother, the Dutch are this and that...".

It was depressing.

Hence, I am terribly amused when some people moan about how "mean" this forum is blah blah blah. They've had it good without realising it.

If you move, set up your own forum and when it's hot sell it to Editor Bob's crew and retire. Or at least treat yourself to Pizza Hut.

Joey!!! YAY!
I will pm you definitely, I am very interested in the TAXES, I know they are pretty high but also living there is not as expensive as it is here...I saw a house for rent 20 minutes from where work would be at 1000 euros a month! Almost made me want to move right there and then!
I would work (fingers crossed( about 20 minutes from Brussels, beautiful area!!!!
I can give you a rough idea of taxes based on our 2010 tax return which we got back from the tax advisor only yesterday.

Based on the magic salary of 120000chf per year below which it is impossible to live

120000 annual salary
16000 social security (includes pension, health, unemployment etc)
25000 tax

Which leaves you with about 80000 chfs to live on. You will have to subscribe to a mutuel for additional medical insurance but this was a ridiculous amount of about 30€ per quarter for the whole family.

You have to fill out a tax declaration every year and most people end up getting a rebate as there are loads of things that are tax deductible.

your salary is generally divided into 13.92 months and you get double salary just before Christmas and almost a month extra in June just before the holidays.

Belgium is not really cheap but it's definately better than here. We are currently renting out our 5 bed detached house with huge garden 20 minutes from Brussels for 1200€ per month.

A wild stab in the dark but were you in the Wavre/Rixensart area by any chance?

I'm so jealous. I'd go back there tomorrow given half a chance. It's not that I don't like Switzerland but the rubbish school hours make it almost impossible for me to find a job here so I'm bored stupid without my friends around.

Hope this helps.

Re: From Basel to...Brussels? Is there an EF like forum in Belgium ?

Being from Belgium, I thought I'd add that apartments are easy to find (http://immoweb.be/). I can also tell you about public transport (not so good) as I used to take the train to uni and work. Driving in Brussels requires some agressive-spirit. If you live in the flemish speaking periphery (like hoeilaart or linkebeek), sometimes the commune (kind of like "kreis" in CH) has free or nearly free flemish-courses.

I'm biaised because it's my hometown, but it's a nice city. Lots of Europeans (ie. non-belgians), I'm one of them.

I concur about the 13,92 salaries. 12 months + extra before summer and before christmas.

Also, employers participate 50-100% to your cost of getting to work (I'm not sure the exact rule, mine covered 100% of my public transport to get to the office).

Mutuelle (health insurance) is cheap. There's no big difference between the mutualités. I pay 10 euros a month (basic compulsory insurance) and 25 euros per year for the zorgverzekering in Flanders (when you are resident in Flanders - also compulsory).

Bank accounts are often free.

That's all I can think of for now...

Nor me for the UK (just one for Americans who mostly have moved over to marry a Brit, a very very different forum to EF).

I would have thought with all of the international organisations in Brussels that there'd be a forum or two in Belgium.

Know exactly where you would be going you lucky thing. I actually gave up a job with them to come here

Our house is probably halfway between the 2 sites but in the French speaking bit. I'm guessing you'd be looking at the Flemish bit since you both speak Dutch already. There are some lovely places to live around there and the rail services into Brussels are pretty good although have to agree that public transport in general is not a patch on Switzerland.

Driving can be a bit hairaising at times but you do get used to it eventually

You do get additional things like luncheon vouchers and free private healthcare at the place you're looking at.

If you are lucky enough to adopt childcare is much easier to find than in Switzerland too.

This is a pretty much one sided argument though as I'm obviously pretty biased and I'm not even Belgian.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you then. Have to warn you though that the company you are looking at can be very long winded so you might have to wait a while for a response.

The free buses are awesome too. They wer4e necessary before they built the extra car parks.

Hope you get the response you're hoping for.

LOL Anthony I say the same thing about going back home but of course crime rates are not as high in Belgium as in Peru, I liked Wallonia (or something like that), it is close to NL but with better health care
