Europe and Asia are very different. Welcome to "stating the obvious 101". Anyway, what I want to say is ... some people will much prefer Asia and some Europe.
I like them both, which is why I try to flit between the two. I spend much more time in Europe though, as this is where (for me) the money and stabiity is.
It's also why I usually live in London as it has a good mix of the European, American and Asian lifestyles. Although one can say "jack of all trades, master of none" (hence I still travel) I find it a great base.
As to why I'm here in Switzerland ... an interesting job opportunity and curiosity brought me here. At the moment I'm happy, but I do escape regularly. A time will come when I want to leave. When that comes, I believe it'll come quickly. One moment I'm happy here, next I will have resigned, found a replacement tenant, and gone. Luckily, I'm in a financial position that I can do that quickly without fear of the future.

I think the most depressing thing about moving from San Francisco to Switzerland was the cost of a good sushi meal. When ever I go to Asia I can feed my family of 4 sushi for about $20. Try doing that at BlueNote! I was in shock when I got my first bill there for my wife and myself. CHF200 is way too much for a two person dinner of raw fish.
Oishi would make a fortune in Switzerland.

Zuger:
It's a choice. Some folks like this:
I call this "civilization", but other people hate it.
Some folks like:
Even during Roman times this would have been a backwater, but some folks like that.
This reminds me...once upon a time some folks lived like this:
and when people started building permanent settlements
I'm sure there were people saying "oh no, the cave is better, it is better, the house is evil...who wants that..."
Just like with everything else you will have folks who prefer to live in a more difficult way...and think this is "noble".

Tom, ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!???? You see that bothers me. The reason why is because everyone here says "the reasons sushi is expensive is because Switzerland is landlocked (So is Kansas yet I can get a cheap sushi meal there as well, but thats another rant).

If you are now having a pissing contest about who has got the best scenery and using pointless images of cavemen you are starting to sound like you are trying to justify the whole move to yourself.

AGWV: Hey Look, I prefer country living. But you see the reason people live in the country or mountains is because they want privacy. They dont want to be bothered. They want a controlled environment for raising their kids properly.
Switzerland is the complete opposite of the rest of the world in this regard.

Just saying... | | | | | The difference is most of Zurich's streets are empty many nights a week Lights are darn pretty though. Hell even on Saturday, way from City Center and Longstrasse you would think the city is empty and almost all stores are closed by 7PM on a Saturday night in Zurich.

Infact, had it not been for the seasonless living and 365 day a year cloudy afternoons I would have never have made it this long in CH. I grew up in the Mid-West where we even see the sunshine during the winter..... I remember my first 9 months in SF. I kept waiting for summer. Kept waiting..... And kept waiting.... Then I found out it was already November! ha ha

That's because there is only one correct way to live, w hich the community decides. Once that is decided you must assimilate, resistance is futile. Saying "live and let live", "mind your own business", or "I'm not hurting anyone, leave me a lone" is crazy talk.

I won't even start re your HK:CH cultural comparison, I know you're just justifying the move to yourself. But Singapore? Everyone likes different things about different places but you're the first person I hear moving to Singapore for culture, excitement and choice in things to do. Granted, if you're into shopping and food (and not much else) you'll be happy.
But I think we've had an entire thread on Singapore a few months back, no need to repeat all the points. I'd rather live elsewhere in Asia (but still love visiting)

Taiwan has low salaries even iwth an expat package, but I have a lot of contacts there, interviews set up. For Singapore all I have is the EPEC (permission to enter and look for work, which was approved) and one interview. Taiwan is far more exciting and interesting than Switzerland and Singapore, but as with everywhere like that, the economy is not as good. Italy and Greece are more interesting culturally than Switzerland or Germany but the economies also suck. Why is that????
My primary goal is not money though, it is a better standard of living and to improve my Mandarin. Taiwan is far better for that then Singapore. More Singaporeans don't speak good English or Mandarin in my experience, despite education in both languages.
Still if I had to pick either over Switzerland it is not even a choice to me.
I'm also not trying to "justify a move"...justify to whom? I"m convinced it is superior, at least for myself. I'm simply bragging. LOL

Tell me you were fired in your last job? You are trying to convince the whole world that how cool is going to Asia and how cool you are doing it and how uncool for people who are staying back.
This is not a very asian style as I know it. I am sure you are not asian. It is great that you are going to place you like but it doesn't mean you have to show all other here down. We don't know your circumstances here. May be you were paid too low to enjoy swiss cultured life. May be you were boring that you couldn't find any civilization or cultural aspect around you to appreciate.
Such pathetic and selecting pictures certainly don't prove any pointless point.
Finally, feel great that you are going to a good place. Also be convinced that people here are largely for reason that they love to be here. If not, they are also smart enough to find options.
Good luck and like some one said win win situation to see someone with that opinion go.
Cheers, | Quote: | | | | | I won't even start re your HK:CH cultural comparison, I know you're just justifying the move to yourself. But Singapore?
