Kuala Lumpur

Hey all.

I know we've got a lot of people who have moved around the world and lived in a lot of places. So I thought I'd see if anyone had a perspective about life as an English-speaking expat living in Kuala Lumpur.

In particular, I am especially interested in what it is like to live there with pet dogs. My impression when visiting Malaysia was that it could be hit or miss depending on the neighborhood and the population/urban density. How is the availability of services for people and pets? And especially English speaking services?

Thanks.

Re: Kuala Lumpur

When I'm daydreaming about living somewhere else, I like to check out the TalesMag website.

http://www.talesmag.com/

It has reports by expats of what it's like to live in various places around the world, including KL. They often talk about pets, too. You could have a look there to get you started. Most of the posters tend to be US embassy staff, but nevertheless, you might see something of interest.

Re: Kuala Lumpur

If in the capital city, the better areas for expats with pets would be Damansara Heights and Bangsar ( but expect expat-like prices too for this privilege ).

Pets are not allowed on public transport though. Driving in KL is nuts ( didn't think you would like to be stuck in traffic for 1.5hrs each way during rush hours ). Personally, I would live away from the city.

All dogs need to have a license granted by the local town council, USD4 approx. per year per pet.

Most professionals speak and write very good English ( British English ) and there are plenty of services for pets.

PDF link for importing pets and another link here ( some breeds are forbidden )
