Leaving Zurich to London - need some info

Hi All,

I hope you had a great start of the year and good time with your families in the holidays.

I received a note that in June I will have to move to London with the family.
First time for us to live in UK and after two years here in Zurich I guess that it's not gonna be a walk in the park.
Would appreciate any information regarding:
1. Reliable movers from Zurich to London (anyone knows how much time it might take? when we moved here it took few weeks due to vessel shipment...).

2. Any Visa information? we are Italian citizens and I need some info about the procedure prior to moving and what needs to be done.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,

R

Re: Leaving Zurich to London - need some info

We used Team Allies from London to Wollerau. They were pretty good. They do have a branch in Zurich. So they move stuff from here to London I believe. I saw their office somewhere in Zurich area.

We took a while to find a house so they kept our belongings for 3 months. So I cannot honestly answer how long it would take. But they probably match your preferable delivery date or near. Cos when we asked them to deliver things on the 1st Nov, they made it that date.

When we did a survey from them, they gave us some info pack about Switzerland. Was useful.

Ah, other colleague of my hubby used Interdean, was also fine. You should get at least two company do survey on your stuff as their charging method are different.

Regarding Visa, you don't need as you are all(I presume) Italian.

Ciao,

I used Interdean when I moved from London to Zurich in 2011 and as my goods were non priority it all went by road, I think it took about 2-3 weeks from collection in London to arrival at their warehouse in Zurich.

As Happyday states, get more than one quote so you can compare costs.

Se volete ulteriori informazioni mandami un email. Buon trasloco.

www.rightmove.co.uk aggregates rental property. I lived for many years in London and can tell you the general areas to avoid.

Re: Leaving Zurich to London - need some info

Hi everybody, I'll take this topic to question something about cost of living between Zurich and London. To go right to the question:

I live in Zurich, I'm a Finance Analyst at a big company and I do about 120k CHF per year, I live by my self in a one room apartment. I'll receive a proposal do move to UK with a UK local contract. For you my Londoner fellows, how much in GBP should I negotiate with the company to get a similar life style?

Thanks for the help!!

Re: Leaving Zurich to London - need some info

London - rentals high in decent areas.

I lived in outer London (Teddington) for a while a few years back while working in London. My experience with London, for what it's worth, is that property rentals are high for anything decent in a decent area ... yes, you could say the same for Zurich... but typically Zurich salary is proportionally higher, in London ( except for financial markets ) salaries are not that much higher than for the same professions in other (developed) city centre's in the UK...

... also commuting in/out of Zurich on public transport (trains) is easy.
wheras in London it's a real pain in the arse ( 3rd world train system in a 1st world city centre... )... a bit of googling will show you just how bad England's train system is.... so commuting in/out of London from some place with decent accommodation can take a LONG time... and be
quite unpleasant ( extreme overcrowding, trains not on time/cancelled, etc. ).

... I could rant on about this, and why so many people in England have no
option BUT to work in London... and the extreme overcrowding etc... but I
won't bother... personally I wouldn't choose to work there again.

Not surprsing, given the the population of Greater London is twice the size of CH However, a large population offers a huge variety of options for a fantastic social life. For this reason, London is great place for single people, but much less attractive for families.

All of course IMHO.

I'm not so sure that the problem is with the train system itself, but just the number of people who are trying to use it everyday. I'm a Brit who lived and worked in London for over 20 years, so I have a little experience. 3-4 minutes to wait for a tube is not bad the problem is when one on the tubes are delayed slightly.

The main problem with London is the number of people who want to live there. I moved there because I was told "to get on my bike" by Fowler (?)

You only have a 1 room apartment whilst on 120k a year? Either you are paying an exceptionally high rent or you are used to a lot of disposable income/saving a lot of your salary!

That taken, I would say it will be hard to do a like for like comparison on the salary basis here due to the vast size and diversity of London vs Zurich. On average the lving cost in London will be cheaper than Zurich overall, but it can depend on what area you chose to live in and the type of lifestyle you maintain. As you are going on a market salary without a build up or cost of living adjustment you would be better placed to look at sites such as Total Jobs, Frazer Jones, Digby Morgan, Micheal Page and other large London recruitment firms to see what the market average salary would be for the financial analyst role you are taking - again this can depend on experience, industy sector and exact location. As an extreme average, a financial analyst in the financial sector with 3-4 yrs of experience would be looking at between 55-65k per annum + benefits + bonus.

If you want to talk further (I have 15 yrs HR experience and have lived and worked in London most of my adult life) feel free to PM me and we can set some time to chat.

I could recommend the UTS network as I used them just recently from a UK to Zurich shipment and they were excellent. The counterpart firm here is Packimpex. Dependent on the shipment type and size it could taken anything from 1 week to 3 weeks. Though with a full family shipment I would expect a minimum of a 20ft container so it should be a direct full load surface shipment that would normally take a week.

Visa wise, as long as you all hold a valid EU passport, there is not a requirement here. Your employer will need to see a copy of this and you are obliged to register with the local council once you have chosen a place to settle. The UK, unlike Italy will not issue the equivalent of a Permesso di Soggiorno (so no need to go to the Prefeturra) and certainly does not have a Nulla Osta requirement for EU citizens.

Re: Leaving Zurich to London - need some info

Dear R,

I am London born. Do you have to find your own accommodation or is your company going to assist you?

As you are a EU Citizen, you will not need a work permit, but at the border you will be required to show your EU Passport, as it is outside of Schengen.

What is important is where you live and work. As you will use public transport & need to know the good connections. It is not unusually to travel between 1 to 2hrs to get to work, so you will want to keep it 1hr or less. If you let me know either the postcode of your office or the area name, I will be happy to give you some tips on areas to live.

How old are your children – so I can talk about school/colleges? (basically the school year starts in September and finishes mid July)

Renting a home in London, June I think will be good time for you. We do not speak 4.5 rooms. We speak how many bedrooms & reception rooms. We do not have separate areas for laundry, you will need to have your own washing machine within your home. Whether your home includes garden you will have to check, whether it has car parking? Many people have to park on the roads.

No idea if you will be paid in Switzerland or UK. If you are paid in the UK you will need to get a National Insurance number, it is very straight forward, your work HR will no doubt tell you where to go.

Setting up a UK Bank Account should be fairly straight forward and no doubt your company will assist.

Once you have your home, suggest you and your family register almost immediately with a local National Health Doctor to your home. They will normally ask you to make an appointment with their nurse who will take your details. Once you are registered it is free to visit the Doctor, usually by appointment. Prescriptions usually have a set charge of around chf 10.00 per item, so if you were getting cough medicine & something else, then it would be CHF20 that you pay at the pharmacy.

On top of rent, you will pay Council Tax, a property has a set charge, I am guessing it will be between £1500 to £2500 per year, that you can pay over 10 months. Water would be around £3 to £400 per year. Some properties have gas, some don’t. Both gas and electric are more expensive than Switzerland. Annual TV Licence, that starts the month you buy it is around £160 a year. Phone line rental is similar to here, but internet is cheaper & you can get a package to include either cable TV or sky.

Shops – we have many in London & you can almost buy groceries 24/7. Sundays have shorter opening hours.

The Police in London do NOT usually carry guns

VAT is 20% in UK

London is multi-cultured & there are some areas that have different clusters of Nationalities or Religions

Most Public Museums are free to enter

For you I would suggest you have your apartment in a central zone in London, Zone 1 (or possibly border on Zone 2) and expect to pay a monthly rental of around £1,200 to £1,800 a month. This would not cover car parking. If you lived in Zone 1, as a single person, would suggest you not to have a car, the public transport would be good enough and you could top up with using Taxi. When you needed a car, you could hire one. There are schemes you can join to hire them by the hour. There is also the TFL Bicycle scheme in Zone 1 that is very reasonable
