Temporary leaving

Hello,

i will be leaving switzerland for up to 6 months (5 months 3 weeks max.) to Australia

and i was wondering, what type of services i could put on hold?

I was told that i cannot cancel my health insurance, and i cannot deregister myself from Switzerland or i will loose my permit B (EU type). is it really like that?

If i don't deregister myself , then i will not be able to put on hold any of my services, like internet etc.

have someone went through this and can advice me what type of costs i could put on hold for 5 months?

Another thing is about taxes - Steueramt says i should pay taxes here, and Australia says i should pay it there... so i should pay it twice? I'm not sure if there is agreement to avoid double taxation between switzerland and australia...

Re: Temporary leaving

Switzwerland has a doublt-taxation treaty (or whatever it's called) with Australia.

However, you need to check what the rules in Australia actually are. If you only have to pay tax there if you stay for 6 months or more then obviously you don't have to pay them there. Depends how you're making your income I suspect.

Most likely scenario is that you pay tax in Australia and then any extra (if any) in Switzerland. You'll probably need to keep up your accident/unemployment/retirement insurance thingies.

If it was me I'd consider de-registering from Switzerland and grabbing a new B permit when I came back.

Re: Temporary leaving

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has some very useful information on their website.

Here is a link specifically to your situation. "If you are a foreign resident of Australia, you only need to lodge a tax return if you have income that is taxable in Australia." http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/co...001/002&st=&cy=

You should contact your health provider because it might cover you during your stay in Australia (for emergencies).

That won't work for the OP as they wish to claim unemployment benefits on their return.

To remain entitled to those benefits any absense upto 6 months must be temporary , for that reason CH has to remain the main residence. Normal services such as health insurance & a place to live have to be maintained.

Where does he say he wants to claim unemployment benefit on his return?

Some of us have got better things to do than trawl through previous posts the OP might have made just in case there might be something relevant to the current question.

It might have been helpful if you'd made a reference to this thread when you made your initial comment since the OP had not stated it in his original post.

It would have been easier for everybody if the OP had just asked the question in the same thread as it's all related.
No doubt the OP will start another thread tomorrow!

Re: Temporary leaving

I think you really have to discuss what you are doing with the appropriate authorities. They are the only ones who can tell you what is best for you to do.

Start with the RAV. Tell your councilor that you have an opportunity to work abroad and see what he tells you. From there you can discuss your options with the commune.

Good luck.

Well you do have a point there. Most people only read the thread concerned and don't search previous threads.

Since both threads are related it would have been a better idea for him to put everything in the same thread. He'd be more likely to get useful anwers that way too.
