Exporting Car from Switzerland

Hi,

We have a car in Switzerland which we plan to take with us when we leave in July.

Does anyone know the process for deregistering a car prior to export?

Do I have to be deregistered with the Gemende before trying to deregister the car?

Many thanks

Re: Exporting Car from Switzerland

You post the number plates and the registration document back to the Strassenvekehrsamt. The car is deregistered and you receive a payment for the remaining road tax and the unused insurance policy value.

Re: Exporting Car from Switzerland

How long can a car registered in CH be used after Deregistration from living in CH. You have 1 year to change a car to Swiss plates, I suspect the Swiss are less generous!

It depends more on where you are going. In the UK registrations have to be changed immediately. The main issue is however car insurance - your Swiss insurance is probably linked to being a Swiss resident!

Re: Exporting Car from Switzerland

After you give in the plates, in 24hours, you are no longer allowed to drive the car at all.
You need a new registration (assuming from another country) and valid insurance, and then you can drive it.
Or you load it up on a trailer.

BTW, I often see some "wise guys" who drive their cars or motos without plates....what is the penalty?

The Swiss insurance is linked to the car, rather than a driver.
I asked when I took my motorbike for a MFK & they said they just needed an address, I sugested a Swiss Post Box internet post address & they said it was fine, not sure if it really is or not.

Do you have a link that confirms that? As your not entitled to reapply for your UK license untill you have been resident for 6 months good luck with that! (see declaration on driving license application form)

Re: Exporting Car from Switzerland

We'll be moving to Denmark in September. We're driving our car there; thus, we cannot deregister the car ahead of time (because we cannot register it in DK before we arrive). Does anyone know how it works to deregister a car with Swiss plates AFTER you arrive in the new destination country? Presumably you mail the plates and registration document back to Switzerland and, with a still-open Swiss bank account, get a credit to your account from the authorities...

Re: Exporting Car from Switzerland

We called into the Swiss motor office to ask them the same question. We are moving to Ireland and have the same problem that we can't register the car in Ireland until we actually arrive in Ireland.

They told us to post back the Swiss plates together with proof that the car was registered in Ireland and they will issue a refund of pre-paid road tax to our Swiss bank account.

I think the insurance is also linked to the Swiss Authority system so the car insurance policy will also be automatically cancelled (and a refund issued) once the plates are returned.

The answer is LARGE! It is not even slightly legal to drive / ride without plates. As the insurance is connected to the plates the unit is most likely also uninsured. ( depends if it's Swiss or not)

One cannot even drive to SVKA without plates to collect them. It depends on the exact infraction filed if caught but you can be looking down the barrel of several thousand chuffs. For example having the wrong plates on overlapping an import time frame and thus they have "expired" I know of one case where an on the spot 5k was issued.

Thanks very much, Bryanag. That's really helpful. One more thing I can cross off the 'we need info on this' list! Hope you have a good return to Ireland.

When we left Switzerland 9 years ago, (we came back since) to the UK we ran our car on Swiss plates for 6 months, during that time we insured the car in the UK using the chassis number and got the car MOT's. Beacuse Switzerland is outside of the EU, it was MOT'd like a kit car. Once we had the UK plates, no later than 6 months ater we entered the UK, we sent the Swiss plates back in the post.

Does this mean you don't have to get the temporary export plates to get the customs paperwork?

Also, when did you do the customs? Can you do it after some time you already left Swizerland?

I just exported my car to France, and will be shipping the plates back soon. I am curious to know how do you receive a payment back when you actually moved out of the country? Anyone knows?

Re: Exporting Car from Switzerland

You have to send the bank coordinates together with the plates and they do a bank transfer. At least that is what I did last year in Vaud.
I would ask before giving them a non-swiss account, I don't know if they do international transfers, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do.
Anyway put in the package also something written on how to reach you, address or phone number, so if there is a problem they can contact you immediately.

Edit: Oh and from France send the package "Recommandé", otherwise they get easily lost.

Well they repaid me last week to a Swiss bank account, all very easy.
As far as Switzerland is concerned you can drive for a year after leaving on Swiss plates, however it may not be allowed to be so long on foreign plates in the new country.

Re: Exporting Car from Switzerland

Hi everyone,

Anybody knows how much time do we have to have a car baught in Switzerland in order to be able to take it abroad (another european country) and registering in there?

I am probably going back and was interested in buying a car and driving back (not only makes life easier in terms of luggage), but would save some cash and have a cheaper better car.

Thanks

That will depend on the laws of the country you are moving to, nothing to do with Switzerland.
