Van to the UK in December?

We're thinking of renting a van and drive it one way to London in December in the days between Christmas and New Year, but I just thought I'd put up a thread just to see if anyone is thinking of moving in the other direction and might want to team up and share a larger van (and the driving), or if it's more economical then possibly share a London/Zurich or Zurich/London two-way rental.

Thanks! Ragno

Hi, have you found a company that will allow you to rent a van to take to the UK from Switzerland?

thanks

Re: Van to the UK in December?

I might be interested as I have some items in storage in UK and would like to bring back here.

Have you specific dates in mind?

If you drove there I could pick up van and drive back? Split the costs etc...

Mike

Thanks Moggy - I have to ask my partner but I believe he thinks you can do it with Sixt.

That might be an interesting proposition... thanks! We were thinking of driving to the UK between Christmas and New Year's. That's the sort of thing I was thinking -- our renting it in Switzerland and your driving it back (splitting the costs) might make sense if you're in the London area. Why don't you PM me and we can discuss it further if you're interested.

You can do it with Sixt no issue at all.
From my experience though just phone a few days ahead and confirm they can supply the van u asked for, i got a luton when all i wanted was a transit, the cost in diesel and extra time on the journey made driving to england and back more painful than it needed to be.

Re: Van to the UK in December?

I too, might be interested in bringing an item from the UK (Surbiton to Zurich) - a desktop computer and a couple of monitors I need.

I hear you need to have the paperwork all sorted with original receipts and some customs declarations..do you know about this?

Would be interested to see how much this costs..

cheers,
Slay

Re: Van to the UK in December?

If you can rent the van in the UK and do the UK to Swiss direction first it will be cheaper...

only problem might be that you aren't supposed to drive a non Swiss plated vehicle in Swiss if you have a Swiss driving licence...

Make sure to tell them you are going abroad so they give you the registration and insurance paperwork for the van (in case you get stopped) and a yellow vest.

Don't worry about customs paperwork for a few items, I've taken a computer and monitors in/out of Swiss loads of times, if they ask just say you are bringing them back in.

Even when I came in with a washing machine and loads of boxes in the back of the car they weren't bothered, they did ask what it was, but still waved me through...

Re: Van to the UK in December?

Now we're thinking after reviewing the situation that it would just be easier to hire movers -- we got a quote and it isn't much more than what we would spend on gas, the van, the hotel spending the night on the road if we did that...

Re: Van to the UK in December?

I have a large van going to Weymouth in the UK, pick up in France, near to the Swiss border, Basel, on 13th December. I can only fill it half way so would like to share the cost, if anyone is interested.

I may also be doing a trip between CH and UK via Belgium between Xmas and New Year too. Will post here if/when it is definite as I may have some room.

Re: Van to the UK in December?

Hi tubbs, thanks so much for the offer but we've found another method. Good luck with the drive!
