shipping computer back to USA

In a couple months, we are moving from CH back to the USA. We only have a few boxes of stuff to move, so it is all going in our suitcases or by Post.

But one big thing I am not sure about is the best way to ship is my large Mac Pro computer and monitor. I purchased them ~4 years ago in the USA, moved them here when I came 2.5 years ago, and now need to move them back. I still have the original boxes and packaging so that is not the issue. I am more worried about customs forms and import fees and whatnot. Especially because they will be in the original boxes, they may look like new purchases and I am worried that either Swiss or American customs will try to charge me some sort of import/export fee on them. In fact, when I moved them here Swiss customs charged me an import tax and it took a couple months of me calling/emailing people and sending them a copy of the orignal receipt to get the money reimbursed, so I am trying to avoid that again. Any suggestions?

Also, I haven't seen much on the Swiss Post website about insurance - I'd like to insure them against damage in transit if it is a reasonable amount of money.

I've been looking around this forum a lot the last few days, but haven't seen any answer to this particular question. Thanks!

Re: shipping computer back to USA

In the past, the normal Swiss post office had the best rates, why not ask them?

You complete two customs forms, you declare
1 computer, bought 2008 in USA, value US$ 100,--
1 flat screen monitor, bought 2008 in USA, value US$ 50

You bought them in the US so you won't be paying any taxes!

Re: shipping computer back to USA

You can NOT insure computers via the Post (too fragile).

"The consignment price automatically includes liability for the contents of your consignment in the case of loss or damage up to a maximum amount of CHF 1000.00. Amongst other things, electronic equipment like mobile phones or computers are excluded from this liability. "

On the paperwork side of things, it will be important on the export docs that the Post Office gives you that you explain that the computers were purchased in the USA, moved to CH and you are returning home with them. Add copies of the original invoices and the import paperwork you got from the Swiss. This should satisfy the US Customs that these are used and were moved with you.

Re: shipping computer back to USA

Your Mac Pro is 4 years old.
Why not take this opportunity to sell it and buy a new one back in USA?

Perhaps you can find a buyer here?

Just a suggestion. Sorry if I didn't answer your question.
