About cancelling the insurance contract of car when leaving Switzerland

I'm going to sell my car to a garage, does anyone know by when time I should terminate the contract of the insurance?

A friend told me the insurance would be automatically terminated and the insurance company will make a refund to me when I give back the car plate to the authority.

Much more than thanks if anyone could answer my question!

I don't mean to sound rude here, but why don't you just call your insurance provider with your policy number and find out?

There are so many "insurance" providers, let alone the options and conditions that you will have, there is no way anyone can answer that specifically for you.

Best bet:
1) Call and ask
2) go to the website and download a pds (product disclosure statement) and look for 'cancellation' or something similar.

As far as I know, they usually return premium on a 'pro-rata' basis, but this is entirely up to the provider.

The insurance won't be 'transferable'. It's technically illegal to hold an insurance policy on an item that isn't yours.
So your friend is pretty much right. Not so much 'cancelled' but it will be invalid (and then cancelled).

This is correct.

I do it several times each year.

You get the road tax refunded, too.

Cancelling Car Insurance

I phoned my car insurance company to ask about cancelling car insurance. They told me to send them a letter of my leaving date and give back my number plates. When I sell the car, I have to give them my bank details so they can refund me for the rest of the year. I will also send them a copy of my de-registration.

Does anyone know how to give back the number plates and to whom?

Is this correct?

You unscrew or detach plate from its holder.
Take bus to your cantons StVA/SAN.
Hand it in at counter.
You may also send it by mail or drop it in the box if place is closed.

do you need a covering letter or identification when you drop them in the box? or do they just automatically get all your info from the plates themselves?

just seems very simple....whereas most things in Switzerland seem unnecessarily complex....making me wary!

They will know who the plates belong to, just as the police will if your caught speeding
