Shipping a few boxes to Canada? Options?

Hello;
I am just wondering if anyone can offer any past experience or suggestions on the best and cheapest way to ship 4 or 5 boxes of belongings to Canada. Speed doesn't really matter at the moment (if it take months to arrive, I'm ok with it). I just don't want to use the post because I know how expensive they can be. So any info would be much appreciated.

Interested to know if you found anything worth sharing in your research? We have the same questions from Zurich- the west coast of Canada.

Indeed, I would also be interested if you found a cheaper option than the Post. I am also moving back to Canada.

My research has been postponed as we decided to stay on a bit longer here. But I hope that if you or anyone finds further options will post here.

You won't beat post office prices for economy mailing because no one else wants to do it. Just put your figures into UPS's or Fedex's websites and see what prices you get. Someone else was asking about prices from Switzerland to California on the forum the other day so out of curiosity I did a quick check using LA as the destination on a 30kg UPS delivery. Slowest service about 4/5 days and cost was just over 700 Swiss francs. So the SFr164 that SwissPost quotes looks rather good to me.

Another thing to consider if you're flying back is to take a box or two as extra luggage. Depending on the airline and the class you fly, it might be cheaper than shipping - at least for some things.

On most of the airlines I fly, one extra "bag" is 50 dollars for 23 kgs. Hard to get a better price even from the Post for that. Sending the same amount of weight from the Post via the economy shipping method is still more than double (113 CHF).

Re: Shipping a few boxes to Canada? Options?

Hi all,

We are in same boat... making a permanent move back to Canada. we hemmed and hawed over cost of shipping our things. Basically, every route we looked at ended up being too expensive to just ship clothes.

We are also considering bringing extra lugage when we fly as this has seemed to be the cheapest option, with 4 Kids, we have a lot of possibilty for extra bags. That being said, if anyone has a good option for other shipping, please let us know! (For example, from Toronto, we were able to ship "Barrels" all over the world on freight ships for comparatively little). Not sure if this is possible here...

Good luck!
