Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

I think a mover might not be worth it for ten boxes. I am moving back to The US at the end of september also, and have shipped boxes through the post. Working well so far...

Thanks everyone for the information!

I am currently planning a move at the end of September from Zurich to Seattle. I have been debating whether to just send packages via Swiss post and sell the rest of my things. I only have maximum 10 boxes plus a road bike that I will ship. (I got my bike box from a friend who recently bought one - but I know that bike shops will have extras and you could ask them for one or ask them to hold one for you!)

I contacted Allied VanLines (US based company) that put me in touch with TeamRelocations here in Switzerland. They quoted me for 15 boxes (2 cubic meters) at 3250CHF with 5-6 weeks door-to-door transport time. I called to confirm this price (which seems super high) and they said that 2 cubic meters was the smallest spot you could buy even if you had less stuff.

Any suggestions? Does this seem high to anyone else?

I think you're right, thanks!! Plus, my things look less and less attractive, knowing how much I'll have to pay for them to come with me

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

Be careful of Welti-Furrer. We used them 1 year ago for a move to California. We had 4 movers in our house for 8 hours. When everything arrived in CA, we had afew things stolen which we reported & the company said they were not responsible. One if the items was a Mont Blanc pen that my husband gave me S a gift. I'm sure their packers regularly look for small valuable items to steal.
Just beware or be careful of this company especially since they assumed no responsibility.

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

Rachel, I moved roughly that same volume for about 60% of the cost. I used these guys. I did my own packing and drop-off, however. On the US side, I did my own pickup and customs clearance from the airport cargo terminal.

Yeah seems very high...did you get any quotes specifically on the bike shipping? I debating if it is economical to sell here and by at my destination.

Can you update us who you used and what your experience was like. Looking for 20ft container to East Coast so similar experience I am guessing.

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

Thank you for your post! We are also planning to move in spring of 2015 and are having a difficult time deciding whether to sell our stuff or to organize a container. Does anybody know if it would be possible to handle the shipping oneself directly with the port and not have to go through a moving company?

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

thanks for all the information here! i am also moving in a few weeks and am trying to figure this all out, and whether i should move my 10 boxes plus bed if it costs the same as just sending the 10 boxes. Can't imagine lugging all my boxes to the post office though, what a nightmare!!

I reckon a luggage forwarder would be perfect for this...

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

Just to help someone else out. Although much of the information in the previous posts remains correct the prices have changed...and not in the customer's favor.

We are moving back to the US very soon from Bern.

The quote we received from several moving companies were all similar and within 1500 CHF of each other, except one outlier that was 5000 CHF higher. Hopefully the update helps prevent sticker-shock for the next person when they begin their comparison of costs.

The companies surveyed were (in no particular order):
Ace Speditions
Allied (via Team Relocations)
Swiss Moving Company
Atlas Van Lines
Welti-Furrer

Seafreight - 20 ft container (~30m^3)

Origin Service
· Overseas packing and wrapping of your removal goods through our specialized packers including packing
material
· Dismantling of furniture through our removal staff
· Establishing of an inventory list in German/English
· Loading into a container at your residence (subject to good access) Transport
· Pick-up of the container at your residence incl. transfer to the Swiss terminal
· Swiss export customs clearance
· Transport from the Swiss terminal to Rotterdam/Antwerp
· Forwarding by ocean freight with a reliable steam line to US-terminal Denver,CO incl. Terminal Handling Charges

Destination Service
· Takeover of your container through our local agent
· US-import customs clearance
· Delivery of your goods to your new residence (normal access available, ground floor, 15 meters carry distance)
· Approx. 25 % of shipment to be unloaded at private warehouse in Golden
· For the balance unpacking of your removal goods (surface unpacking of boxes)
· Easy Assembly of furniture (*see remark)
· Return of debris/container on the day of delivery

Cost: ~13,500 CHF.

FYI a 40 foot container runs about 1/3 more on average: except for the really expensive company where it was only 2000CHF more (20,000 CHF).

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

My issue has been with how long the shipments take. I've been told lowest for air is 3 weeks and sea is 4 weeks. Is this normal? Does someone have other experience? I'm just moving back to NYC.

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

We were quoted 6-8 weeks as we were told there was a dock strike in the port of LA. Although the situation has been resolved and we will actually receive our good via Houston the firm continues to quote this period as a CYA measure. The representative did not use those exact words but you get the point.

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

The estimate provided above for costs is usually the case when the company pays for the move. So while good to compare, let the company take care of such a huge container type move.

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

The prices will depend on the pre-bought shipping lanes purchased by the companies and/or their partners. I would caution to check out the insurance they are including as some are much better than others...this to me is very important as these containers regularly fall of ships.

We are also moving to California in 2 weeks and got a quote for a large container for 13,000 from Welti-furrer! Glad to see its inline ... also trying to now sell everything and get things sorted.

Good Luck
Be careful with this company, Welti-Furrer. we used them for our relo back to California. During the day of the move, there were 8 movers in the house, we had money stolen & small items, an expensive Mont Blanc pen that was a gift from my husband. Contacted them and they asked the movers if they stole the money and items, they said no and that was the end of that. They refused to do anything further.

Re: Moving to USA, Shipping quotes

I just shipped from the USA to Belgium. (My truck with all belongings in it) it took 4.5 MONTHS to get here due to the strike in LA. From what I am told it will take months to get rid of this back log so keep that in mind.

btw I paid 1600$ for the truck with all the stuff in it door to door. (I had a friend do it who ships cars for a living so I shared a 40ft 'er with him

Unfortunately what else do you expect them to do about ti, it's really a case of your word against theirs. It's pretty sure the moves took "expensive MB pen" and money if it was lying around, try your insurance maybe and see what they say

Take it from your handle you're moving back to the Denver area? We're in the same position, planning for end of July, and just starting to investigate the topic. Which company did you go for in the end? Was it really 13k?!

I got a fourth reasonable quote that didn't seem like a scam from Reloswiss. In their words, for 5 cubic meters (approx. 176 cubic feet):

"CHF 3.485,00 flat

This includes the professional packing of your goods in your house (fragile, furniture etc.) incl. all cartons and other materials (on collection’s day only), Swiss export formalities, transport to Rotterdam, port handling and ocean freight, normal customs clearance, delivery to your new residence in Durham, unloading, placing of items into designated rooms, unpacking of furniture, simple reassembly and same day removal of used material.

Excluded are any duties and taxes, storage, physical customs exam or x-ray, long hand carry or shuttle due to difficult access at origin or destination, higher than 2end floor without lift, heavy items like piano, safe etc.

Fully comprehensive insurance cover is available for a premium of 2,2% of the declared valuation. Deductible is CHF 500,00."
If you care about your stuff, please don't use this company. We did and a lot of our stuff arrived damage. The real frustration though is that this company is impossible to work with and won't do anything to help us via the insurers. I'd highly recommend using a UK removals company (very much regret that I didn't) because the customer service of a Swiss company is, well, Swiss. Unfortunately I learned the hard way that one must consider the worst case scenario when one entrusts all one's personal belongings to a removals firm.
