Staying back after permit expiration

After work contract expires - can me and the family stay back for a couple of weeks for traveling around Switzerland and Spain?

If so, may I know the process for this? I am a US citizen.

Thanks in advance for all the helpful information.

Re: Staying back after permit expiration

We are also US citizens and were told by the Registration Office at the Stadthaus that we could stay in the country for another 3 months as "tourists" after our work contracts and permits expire. However, I don't know how this affects apartment contracts, health insurance, etc. You may want to give them a call to double check. Hope this helps.

Re: Staying back after permit expiration

My concern would be having to exit the Schengen space then re-enter as a tourist. You might want to check on this... It was hammered into me that I need to be OUT of the country in order to be issued a Schengen visa; it was not permissible to enter the country as a tourist then engage in gainful activity as part of the same entry. I don't know if the reverse is also true.

Re: Staying back after permit expiration

Checked with the Geminde and was informed that (a) at the time of de-registration of work visa, we need to apply for tourist visa and (b) being US citizens, this should be easy. So looks hopeful.

As U.S. citizens you do not need a visa to be a tourist. Perhaps they're a bit confused.

Re: Staying back after permit expiration

I found this:

Quote:
Can I stay in Switzerland or in another Schengen member state after my Swiss residence permit has expired?

It depends on whether you are subject to visa regulations or not.

If you are subject to visa regulations, you can apply for a visa to the competent diplomatic mission of the Schengen member state of your principal destination. Your application must be submitted no later than 15 days before expiry of your Swiss residence permit. If your principle destination is Switzerland, you can contact the cantonal migration office to extend your stay. The migration office will decide whether to extend your stay or grant you a visa.

If you are not subject to visa regulations, you are permitted to stay in Switzerland as a tourist for a further 90 days without authorisation. If you wish to travel to another Schengen member state, you should – in order to avoid possible difficulties - inquire from the competent authorities of that member state under what circumstance you may stay there.

I also dont believe it should be an issue at all. Enjoy your last months in Europe before your big move!

You can check whether you need a visa or not. but if your passport does not need a visa in general, you can stay up to 90 days without any sort of permit after it expires. you could check on the admins website

Re: Staying back after permit expiration

If in doubt, have a weekend in the UK and the return to the Schengen zone as tourists for your holiday.

Health insurance will be the trickier bit. To be in Europe as tourists, you have to sign out of Switzerland and no longer be covered by Swiss health insurance. But if you have not yet returned to the States, will you be able to get US health insurance?

Leaving Zurich but coming back for holiday soon thereafter

I was wondering if it is necessary to get a 90 day schengen visa if an international assignment ends and I return to United States for six weeks and then return to Switzerland for the entire month of the August for a post rotation finale holiday. I am facing this situation and wondering if I should get a 90 day visitors permit or not right before my B permit is de-registered.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

The Schengen Visa is valid for one 3 month period in a 12 month period. How does that stand with you? Are you here to work, or for a holiday? Why are you leaving? Why can't you stay here?

We need more information.

Re: Staying back after permit expiration

I have merged your thread, phillyfan. As an American you do not need a visitor's visa to return to Switzerland for a short visit after you leave.

Re: Staying back after permit expiration

Old thread but useful really. I am overstaying for a 10 hours and I had to get a permission from Migrationsamt for the same. Costed me CHF 90.
In case you are from one of the countries like me where Visa regulations apply and have accidentally, or otherwise, staying beyond your resident expiry contact Migrationsamt (In Zurich --> Berninaplatz), carry
1. valid ticket,
2. passport
3. your resident card
4. Cash (CHF 90) or card
5. A generally agreeable disposition :-)

regards
