moving - shipping boxes

Hi all,

apologies if this question has been answered already.

I have about 2 m3 of boxes to be shipped to aus. crown relocation says it's too small of a job for them. They suggested DHL, who wants dimentions and weigh of each box, before the system can calculate.

I will be providing DHL with that required information .

Would anybody be able to suggest/recommend other shippers? in CH? In DE? in Italy? I go to DE and Italy on a regular basis, so I can take the boxes with me ... I'm trying to find out what the 'savings' might be, first.

Many thanks!

I am moving to Australia too. I got a quote from Packimpex (Kentin Australia). They gave me a quote of ~5300 Australian dollars for 3 cubic meter. The price includes packing and other services.

Re: moving - shipping boxes

We are moving to the US and a friend recommended SwissMoving.com
We are in the same position in that we only have about 10 boxes to move. They do consolidate and ship via NY. They are based in Zurich so looks like we will be packing ourselves. Any suggestions where best to buy moving boxes and packing materials?

Re: moving - shipping boxes

Moving boxes can be purchased from ikea (2pcs will cost 4.95 or 5 pcs from coop bau& hobby will cost 11.35 sfr).
Air cushion cover will be available at hornbach or coop bau&Hobby.

Ask the neighbours, if they got old newspapers(and moving boxes).

Re: moving - shipping boxes

Postal service in Germany offers sending a box for around 100 - 120 CHF, for around 20 kg.
Thats about 1000 - 1200 CHf for 10 boxes.

Re: moving - shipping boxes

I'd be careful with banana boxes. Sea water is likely to get into the container. I have seen it happen many times.

I found freight forwarders who are willing to pick up the boxes on site in zurich, ship them to a central city, help with the customs clearance and pick from their location. For customer purposes, the paperwork has to be right - details of the contents of each box would be required.

Insurnce would be separate, I guess.

DB Schenker will do it.

I was quoted about CHF 600, for 2m3.

I'd use strong, double-walled boxes (i.e. not those from Ikea, Migros Screw-it-all etc).

Boxes moved with consolidation may get moved and stacked a few times. Weak boxes may not survive.

We got our last lot from here. They deliver and also sell packaging.

Re: moving - shipping boxes

There have been various comments on similar threads that getting quotes from the UK is best and I got one that I was pretty happy with quote from movecorp.co.uk. It was to be packed by me. My issue was that I couldn't find any packing boxes in Switzerland that were double corrugated book boxes that didn't have holes in the sides which they call handles. I wanted sealed boxes. I think I've maybe just found them, though I have yet to check...

Anyway, movecorp.co.uk quoted Geneva-Australia:

Total Cost:

£1,579.00 door to door service. (CHF 1,954.00 at today's RoE) based on a volume of 225 cubic feet

£1,829.00 door to door service. (CHF 2,263.00 at today's RoE) based on a volume of 265 cubic feet
