Leaving Switzerland for the USA no (not yet) new address

Has anyone had any experience with this? Moving out of CH, but don't yet know where you are moving in the US? Storage options with moving co in US for maybe up to a year?

What exactly is your question? Do you require to submit an address for deregistering? If that's the case, tell them, that you'll be traveling and you won't have a fixed address.

Most large shipping company will have a storage option, simply ask for a quote based on your expected volume. Many storage company websites may even have an online volume calculator to help you estimate costs.

Our various moves to and from the US are too far back in the mists of time to be relevant to today's costs, but just to give you an idea, think 5 figures for a typical American 10 room home, that is, a ca 40 foot shipping container. Can't remember exactly what we used. But I do remember being surprised that the cost of going from a 20 to a 40 foot container was not appreciably that much, hence the decision to go with the larger one.

(Company moves. Were it on my own dime I'd have done things quite differently.)

---

We are currently renting a storage unit in Nowheresville, Indiana. That was the only solution we could think of to with deal a few things from the ILs estate. There were things of sentimental value we wished to keep but didn't have space for here in Switzerland.

Going from memory here, so grain o' salt and all that: The cost of a storage unit depends on volume, the place we use (climate controlled) ranged from $30-ish to $200-ish per month.

You might find less expensive prices if the unit is not climate controlled, but that comes with risk. Prices might be better outside of upscale areas.

A rather expensive solution for our 'stuff', it's now several years on and we anticipate several more years before we move back. The actual value of the stuff is less than the anticipated storage costs over the years. But there were no other options for these few sentimental pieces.

If there were there no sentimental attachment to these things I'd have given them away from the start. IMO, baring the odd Rembrandt you might have hanging in the attic, storing 'stuff' is rarely a sensible financial decision, as most everyday sorts of things not only decline in value but also condition while in storage.

How about buying a 40 foot container and store the filled thing at a suitable place? Just a crazy idea.
