I guess every school makes its own rules in regards with per Sie and per Du when addressing students. I know some schools which are exactly like what Urs Max described.
There are no schools like that in my area.

Probably. That's why, in similar discussions in real life, I always say that if one looks better or in the right places, there's something for everybody in Switzerland. Unfortunately, not all of us can afford the freedom to choose, but the possibilities are real.

Lol, really?
Let me explain better then.
Haven't you noticed the many threads in which local schools' policies were debated on EF? I noticed so many unhappy or not-content parents (foreign parents, obviously).
They tend to generalise and talk about a Swiss system which is not experienced the same way by everybody here. In reality, there are significant differences between schools, communes, cantons, teachers! even. Of course, not everybody can decide to simply move their kids to a different school if they are not happy in a certain place, however, generalising about the whole system is not very wise imho.

Gotch'ya. That may be but the public schools in my area do adhere to the same rules in regard to the way they address each other. However, as you've noted, there are other significant differences among schools, one being the way each secondary school approaches the A and B student system.

. I am a fairly young guy who really wishes to start a family, but it seems way more difficult to find a female partner here than in other countries.
Perhaps hitting the gym, learning how to build self-confidence, and dressing well could help you.

I think the hipster teacher is aware of the fact that his personal policy will get on the other teaching staff's nerves, I think it's done somehow deliberately, not only for educational purposes. He might want to have a go at other "policies"..
Please keep in mind that my experience is 30 years old and more. I trust many things have changed since
(though just as certainly some things stayed the same)

We had those hipster teachers as well. I clearly remember two, one was doing his practical training, just a few years older than us, everybody was on "Du". But that was just a replacment for three weeks.

The other is particularly interesting: He got his own Matura a few years earlier at the same Gymi he taught at, it was his first job. He knew quite a few from some music events so was "per Du" with them. His solution to the dilemma was to apply the same rules to everybody during school hours, all pupils had to call him by his family name and "Sie" - his way of showing there's no preferential treatment for anybody.

I never, ever called anybody an arsehole - in any language. It is just not what I do.
I used to be the same, but the older I get, the less I care. It's reserved for really stupid people, but I do use it.

Being honest isn't always the smartest choice, but feels very good...

Calling someone an arsehole is not being honest.

I'm very honest - and laugh when I notice how people get annoyed by it. ROFL.

You're right, it seems to be an age thing. Lately I've noticed with several friends who are older than me that their manners and their ability - or willingness - to express themselves constructively go downhill.

What can I say? Alle the more reason for me as a female to keep the way I address people decent = young

Yes it is. Simple example: Last weekend I went to IKEA. Yes, it's a bad idea to go there on a Saturday, but I need furniture... parking lot is pretty much full. For the people living under a rock: IKEA has huge parking lots and every 20-30 meters is there one line reserved for pedestrians that have to lug their heave trolleys full of flat pack furniture across.

Right in front of my eyes does one guy decide that he is sick of searching for a free spot and parked his car right on the pedestrian spot, effectively blocking it for all trolleys and forcing people with heavy shopping to make a 50 meter detour. I friendly told him to move his car for that reason. He stares at me like I am an alien, gesticulates wildly and makes not intention to move his car, but proceeds getting his jacket from the booth. As that did not work did I indeed tell him less friendly once again that he blocks all trolleys and in is in my eyes an asshole. Not sure if it took the insult to make him stop and think but he then actually moved his car!

Didn't you offer your flat because you're moving abroad? You buy furniture in Ikea Switzerland now?

I almost forgot how important the nationality is to Swiss people... the arsehole was most likely French.

White, middle aged, no apparent immigration background... Sorry to disappoint.
