| | AVS vs AHV reimbursement when leaving Switzerland
I'm a bit confused and I have tried to find more information on it but have only become more confused. I have read that foreigners living in CH can apply to have the AVS they paid while they lived here when they leave. So, does this mean that the social security that was paid (AVS) is reimbursable as well as the state pension (AHV)? Or is it only one of them?
Or does it depend on the nationality of the individual or where they may be going?
I would not think that social security (AVS) would be reimbursable but maybe I am wrong here?
Thanks for any guidance.

The second pillar is refunded, I believe, but not the state-pension element. However, this stays in the pot and you’re eventually eligible for a Swiss state pension, commensurate with your contributions.

AVS = "Assurance-vieillesse et survivants" OR "Assicurazione vecchiaia e superstiti"
AHV = "Alters- und Hinterlassenenversicherung"
Both are the very the same. One is the French/Italian term, the other the German term.
The English one is OASI "Old-age and survivors's insurance"

Thank god for that! That helps clarify a bit. I saw people quoting one then quoting another. I only know AVS (I don't speak German), but I always feel a bit clueless here. Thanks VERY much for that.

It does depend on your nationality. I believe citizens of some European counties can get their AHV (pillar 1) refunded, and I know that US citizens cannot.

Hopefully not hijacking this thread too much but thought I would post here rather than creating a new thread as my question is related I think!!
If you do apply for a refund of the AHV does it effect the transfer of your social welfare contributions to EU member states using the PD U1 form?

I would like to get AHV reimbursement upon leaving my job in CH. The question is can I get a reimbursement using either a USA or French passport?
If not, does that mean I will receive a monthly AHV payment upon retirement even if I live abroad?
Must one do something (register with AHV now) in order to stay 'active' and ultimately receive a payment in retirement?
Thanks
