Move from Basel to Freiburg?

BACKGROUND

Hi,

I have read a good few threads on this and like with anything there are pros and cons, but definitely, people’s personal situations will vary.

The family and I have decided that we will make the move to Freiburg from Basel. I am an EU national and my wife a non-EU national.

We believe by moving, we will benefit in the following ways/experience the following improvements:

- Cheaper to buy a house/apartment when we are ready to do so

- Lower rent

- Lower health insurance

- Food, drink, eating out all lower

- More affordable for our kids to be involved in extracurricular activity such as swimming, football, martial arts, paying for a tutor etc.

- I am the only one that works as my wife look after our kids - Maybe have some more! But I think the taxes won’t be as high for a family of 4 compared to if I was single/or if we were a professional working couple

- I will not have to import my car and pay a substantial amount of money (new car)

- I think it is a more sociable environment, I could be wrong. I also feel like I get very little for my money and money seems to go much further in France and Germany for example. I do not earn a massive Swiss or a Swiss salary equivalent hence the thinking about the move, if I commanded a higher salary, we would probably never move - Moving jobs is not so easy in Switzerland for me, and especially most of the jobs are in Zurich for what I do.

Given my kids are so young, I do not want to perform a move later, it will be more difficult but more importantly, they have not started school yet so it’s good for us to make the move now than in years to come.

- The downside is, I will continue to work in Basel and commute (drive daily) between the two locations. Though my company will permit for me to work from home a few times per month - I do not mind driving, it does add some costs for fuelling and commute time but I think it is worth it for the reasons outlined above.

- Tax, I know is lower in Switzerland but then, I expect to come out with more because everything else will be lower. My gross salary is 122k chf / 108k euro.

QUESITONS

- Has anyone done something like the above for similar circumstances and I am interested in knowing if it was a positive or negative experience?

- What is the best way for finding accommodation/rent in Freiburg? I have done some google/looked at links. I only see a handful of places….very little available

- Any recommended areas to live in? We do not have to live in Freiburg city itself but a suburb that has good train/tram links and supermarket as well as park but is clean/safe - Ideally avoiding traffic hotspots if it exists in Freiburg.

Note: On a side note, not interested in Lorrach.

Many thanks in advance for your views/inputs/thoughts

Regards,
James
