Keeping Swiss bank accounts after leaving

Is it possible to keep your bank accounts open after leaving?

I've asked around and most banks say no... but then... they don't come knocking on your door to see if you still live there.

Any thoughts on maintaining your accounts after leaving?

You can do, but when they find out and they almost certainly will find out, the accounts get quickly closed. Various arbitrary expenses are levied by your bank for whatever reason and they then transfer any balance to where you ask it to be transferred (bank to bank) so if the money was undeclared it may give you a further headache.

Unless of course you have multi millions, then they will provide you with a very soft grade of toilet paper......

Because you no longer live at the address where you were registered before?

Only if mail is not forwarded, long term mail forwarding is expensive so it's cheaper to pay the 30 CHF a month fees if you only have 1 bank.
As tax evasion is not a crime in CH they won't care on that front.

Which bank has a 30CHF fee for international customers?

So does that mean that it is possible to keep a bank account open, provided you pay monthly fees? Many thanks in advance. Also what is the story with credit cards. Is it possible to keep a credit card account open after leaving CH?

How often does your bank send someone to your address to check that you live there?

Never, but they do send regular mail, don´t they? So better to set up mail forwarding or pay as FMF said.

Why would one even want to keep it open? Are you looking for somewhere to wash your dirty laundry?

To receive money owed by persons or companies in Switzerland who/which may not be able or willing to make international transfers.

To be able to just get on with it and use CHF for things in Switzerland, especially smaller sums, without bothering with foreign exchange rates.

To have and use the convenience of a local bank during any visits to Switzerland.

To provide consistency in recurring transactions (receiving, such as a pension or paying, such as a mortgage or child-support) which may need to continue uninterrupted by the person's leaving the country.

To have a Swiss destination into which to transfer money from abroad, especially in case one were to return to Switzerland.

And so on.

And I was told by my bank (CA) that they will eventually close my account if I move out - are they allowed to do that?
Or should I just make some phantom payments to have some activity on it?

Sure, they can do that. They are not obliged to keep a customer.

Banks do that all the time ......

I was told that as long as I wasn’t going to US, the account can stay open (they charge higher fees).

Re: Keeping Swiss bank accounts after leaving

UBS charge 30 CHF per month for keeping an account open when living outside CH. They have also just informed me that they will also start charging -0.7% interest on the balance held - so you pay them for the priviledge of keeping your money here. They said it was vecause Swiss authorities charge them negative interest on thw balances they hold and they are now passing this onto customers.

If you need/want to keep the account, domicile it in CH and redirect the mail.

Re: Keeping Swiss bank accounts after leaving

As I have been searching into this subject as well, this thread came in useful to read.
There's an article which I just discovered and found quite informative as well, so would like to share it: "Swiss Bank Fees For Non-Resident Customers" ( https://www.moneyland.ch/en/swiss-bank-fees-abroad ).
