Deregistration from Gemeinde

Dear All,

I tried to look up the threads for answers but none fit exactly what I was looking so I hope you can help to give some insight.

I am planning to leave Switzerland to take on a job in the US.

We are planning to quit our rental apartment at the end of February. However, we are planning to travel within Switzerland for about two weeks (until say the middle of March). I am aware we are able to deregister early at the town hall. We would still like to be covered by health insurance during our travel within Switzerland.

1) Can I deregister only at a later date, say middle of March? I read about
how some landlords will deregister on the tenant's behalf, but I don't know what my landlord will do.

2) Must I physically leave Switzerland on the deregistration date, and not earlier or later? There are no firms plans yet for the travel, so the departure date is just a guessimation for now.

Appreciate your help!

Re: Deregistration from Gemeinde

You can de-register in advance. So you can tell your gemeinde what date you are leaving Switzerland, and get the paper work from them, in advance of your leaving date. You can then use this to cancel other contracts in advance.

Re: Deregistration from Gemeinde

Given your nationality you can also stay here as a tourist.

The move-out notice by the landlord is not the same and does not replace your actual deregistration. It is possible to remain registered even if you move out. Just make sure that your mail is put on hold (you have to collect it at the counter) and later forwarded to your foreign address.

Thanks! I guess my question is: if I tell the Gemeinde say 2 weeks in advance that I am leaving on March 15, and the paperwork shows March 15 , but I only physically leave say on March 20, is that OK?

Sort of. If you want your Swiss health insurance to cover you for those few days then you need the document from the geminde to show 20th March and not 15th. If you don't then you can say 15th and be fine to stay for a few more days without Swiss health cover.
