Moving from Switzerland to the UK - questions regarding customs

I've been living in Switzerland for just over a year and am now finally returning back to the UK via Luton Airport. During my time in Switzerland, I've purchased a new laptop and a phone.

My question is, do I have to declare the laptop and phone and therefore pay tax/duties? The laptop is out of the packaging and has been used already, the phone is ideally a gift (worth around CHF 500).

The UK has this page:

https://www.gov.uk/duty-free-goods/a...m-eu-countries

(When you click EU countries, Switzerland is listed there for the single market and isn't mentioned in this section: "If you’re bringing in goods from the Canary Islands, the north of Cyprus, Gibraltar or the Channel Islands, you’ll need to follow the rules for countries outside the EU.")

Thanks in advance.

If you relocate, than this information is more useful: https://www.gov.uk/government/public...outside-the-eu

Just like Switzerland the UK demands that you have owned and used the goods for at least 6 months prior to the move. Other than that you have the regular tax and duty free limit of £390. If you are above that you must pay import tax and duty on the full amount.

Switzerland is not an EU country and specially not part of the EU customs area. The rules for EU countries apply to EU countries only. Neither EEA countries nor Switzerland. Otherwise it would says EU, EEA, and Switzerland.

No one is going to question your used phone or laptop.... you'd be mad to say anything.

you say that but it is Luton airport he's going to....

the official line is six months owned as pointed out; in reality, the green channel is your route through to the outside world.

I'd be more worried about the person picking you up getting a parking ticket if I'm honest.

Unless they get stopped for something else like travelling with 8 large suitcases or something. Their appearance might also be a factor (white privilege)
