How to get our C-Permits frozen? Dear EF Members, It has been a while since I last posted on the forum... Now we are planning to leave Switzerland and spend some time with our families outside of Europe. We would like to get our C-Permits "frozen" for 3 years. According to the migration office there is no form we have to fill but send a letter with our request and reasoning. Could you please help us to collect the main aspects influencing the decision? So far we know, that it helps if we leave our pension money here. Please help us to come up with further arguments! Thanks a lot in advance & cheers, Vix |
Re: How to get our C-Permits frozen? As far as I understand, they are normally only frozen for reasons such as Swiss employer sending you to work abroad, or studying abroad. However maybe they will make an exception if you have super good reasons to spend 3 years abroad with your family  |
Re: How to get our C-Permits frozen? Yes, we are definitely going for the exception... That's why I started the thread to profit from the collective wisdom of the EF members... |

Re: How to get our C-Permits frozen? Hello, I believe there is a form which you can fill out, it does have a section for "other grounds" for the request. Its called "Gesuch um Aufrechterhaltung der Niederlassungsbewilligung" which you can find online and print. If Im wrong I apologise... Regards.. |
Re: How to get our C-Permits frozen? There's some official explanation of the conditions under which a C-Permit can be frozen, here: 3.5.3.2.3 Aufrechterhaltung der Niederlassungsbewilligung während eines Auslandaufenthalts of the Weisungen und Erläuterungen of the SEM I. Ausländerbereich (Weisungen AIG), Updated version of 2021 in this pdf file:///I:/Downloads/weisungen-aug-d%20(4).pdf Hope that helps. |
Re: How to get our C-Permits frozen? From my understanding, C-Permits can be suspended for up to 1 year, after than a maximum of 2x 6 months under special circumstances. 3 years is pushing the envelope. I have read many anecdotal incidents of people being place back on B-Permits upon their return, especially if non-EU. |
Re: How to get our C-Permits frozen? Just become Swiss, problem solved! Tom |

Re: How to get our C-Permits frozen? Correction: In KT Zürich it can be "frozen" for up to 4 years. https://www.zh.ch/content/dam/zhweb/...ewilligung.pdf Hopefully in 4 months I'll have Swiss citizenship, and then this would never be an issue for me :) |
Re: How to get our C-Permits frozen? I remember reading from someone here, that it can’t be frozen past it’s validity date. Ie you might be able to freeze it for 4 years, but if your current permit has only 2 years on it, then that’s your limit. You have to be back before it expires. |
Re: How to get our C-Permits frozen? AFAIK each Canton has a certain amount of flexibility on granting exceptions so it a case of pot luck really. |
