Storage

Hi Guys, After two years we’re leaving Switzerland and are looking to store our furniture/belongings for a period of approximately 2 years. We are in Aarau but can travel to Zurich or Zug Kanton.
I don’t want to pay more than 100 chf per month so the storage facilities are out of the question but does anyone know of any companies offering hobby rooms? Thanks in advance

Re: Storage

Many apartment blocks have hobby rooms for rent. Just check homegate, immoscout, etc. and also your local paper.

Ok .. explain me the principle of hobby rooms please?

It's in an apartment block, you can store furniture and stuff there, for 2 years .. For less than 100chf per month..

but i assume you can't live there? Can you sleep there sometimes? Maybe at the weekend? I don't get it?

We have a hobby room in the basement of the apartment building next to ours and pay about 100 per month. The room is about the size of a kid's bedroom. We can do whatever we want in it / with it and keep whatever we want in there, but I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to live in there, and there is a rule that people aren't supposed to sleep in there -- or at least not on a regular basis. I use ours for music and painting but do have a sofa bed in there for lounging or if I just want some quite space to read, away from our apartment.

Re: Storage

You would need to check if they let you rent if you are leaving the country. Are you planning to return? If so perhaps you could sublet current flat without the cellar? Especially if it's well placed/priced?

The hobby rooms in our building aren't a place you'd sleep except maybe in summer when your flat is too hot. They aren't ventilated, don't have a loo or sink attached, etc. People store excess stuff and one guy has a model railroad set up.

Sounds like the cave which apartments have in romandie .. Last apartment block i stayed in had the cave for each family .. Plus a bike room and a bomb shelter.

To rent officially from a landlord you'd need to be a resident, the OP may find someone willing to do it as a friend..

Re subletting, I was told, again, you would need to be a resident to be able to sublet.

I think you could say we have both? Every flat in our building has a designated cave/keller/whatever. The rent includes one keller per flat. The keller is actually one large room in the basement, with the individual "rooms" set apart by thin wooden wooden slats that run floor to ceiling. If you're motivated you can easily break down the slats and steal everything. You can also see everything everyone has and whether they are slobs or not.

The hobby rooms are fewer, i.e. not enough for each flat to have one. They cost extra like a parking space. They are totally closed off rooms separated with proper concrete walls and sturdy doors. You can't easily break in and you don't know what's in there unless someone leaves the door open. At least two of the hobby rooms in our building are rented to people who don't live here.

Re: Storage

The big question - how much space do you need (in m3).

Assuming you pack everything in tidily and can put things in/on/under other things this may not be so much, and a storage unit is an option for example

https://www.placeb.ch/en/rent-storag...ands/lenzburg/

The advantage with this is they are managed; if you have storage in an apartment block and are away for two years that may not be so easy if anything happens.
