The Ploughmans Lunches in Rapperswil, and the Highlander’s games, and the Classic Car show in Morges 😊
All nice memories !
Such a pleasure to have met you Grumpy. You’re such a gentleman.

Ploughmans Lunches in Rapperswil remind me of Begga too.

Here's wishing you well, Grumpy. Send us your news after a while, please. Or just leave Switzerland but stay on EF.... that'd be better. All the best for your new life!

After 15 years of living in Switzerland, I’m leaving next week for the Netherlands. It’s been a rather hectic rollercoaster of a ride, in fact it feels more like 25 years! I joined EF just some months after it was started by Mark and I was lucky to have met him a few times before his untimely death.

From running a graphics company in London to breeding Arabian horses on Flumserberg, I finally settled down and opened a cheese shop in Zürich (yes, the British Cheese Centre), launching the original online version on EF in November 2007. But the last 2 years have been tough, exhaustion and burn out for me, and then Covid which really hurt sales, and now Brexit is causing massive problems for food exporters in the UK. Also, for almost 6 years I’ve had a long distance relationship with my Dutch lass over there, and because of Covid, we haven’t seen each other for 6 months.

I’ll turn 60 this year and quite frankly I’ve run out of energy and drive. The cheese shop is in good hands with new owners, younger and more energetic than me but I’ll still be involved in the background as a consultant to help them out.

So, thanks all EF members who have been great customers and friends over the years, I remember those early years of Ploughmans Lunches in Rapperswil, I couldn’t have done it all without you. And if any of you love Dutch cheese, well, I’ll see what I can do.

But right now, I’m looking forward to more time like this!

All the best in love and life Mike. I will always remember you very fondly as a quintessential gentleman and an overall good egg who had a unique place in Züri expat hearts and minds.

I don't know you, but I wish you all the best. Life is a journey with countless twists and turns, some good some bad. Hopefully only good turns from now on for you. Stay happy, healthy and safe

Good Luck! (Not "Goog luck" like I accidentally typed in your rep, finger was faster than my brain)

Hi Mike,

Circumstances have pushed you to make moves that you would not have been considered in better times. But it was a good decision.

I am confident the results will be very positive and you will look back at your years in Switzerland with affection, but now look forward to enjoying this exciting new step in your life.

We met a few times at the Expat Expos if you remember...

I am happy for you and wishing you all the best, it is so important to be close to your loved one.

I always wanted to play hooky from work in Oerlikon and come for a pint at your place ... I will still try with the new owners and hope they will carry on well in your honor.

Can fully understand your reasoning, and 6 years is a long time to be doing the distance thing.

Given all my other-half's family lived in NL, might catch you one day passing through :-)

Ahh, I saw this day coming a few years back and you've earned it.

Some great times and huge hangovers in the early days in the Viaduckt. Rapperswil was quite an experience too. Haha!

I wish you all the best GG and if I'm popping through your way I'll pick up the tab for a beer or three!

I only met you a few times but I will never forget the impression that you had on me - I remember your kindness towards Teckla - Begga dog - that summed up the sort of person you are.

Wishing you much happiness in your future - you truly deserve it x

Re: Time to say goodbye.

Wow, thanks everyone for all the nice comments.

I'm planning on popping back every couple of months to host cheese tastings and talks, not to mention to see some of my many friends I have here in ZH. I'll be taking a few months off though to rest, later in the year I hope to get some gigs as guest speaker at companies and business colleges, I've done a few of them in the past and I really enjoy them. I'll also pop in to EF now and then for a bit of banter.

Then I hope to get on and finish my book. It's about British cheese, but mostly about me selling it to the Swiss with lots of really nice anecdotes in there. Working title is "Confessions of a Kaesenova".

Def keep in touch, I'll be Arnhem, but it's a small country and I'm looking forward to travelling around it.

----------------

This Friday evening and Saturday afternoon (3 - 6 or so) I'll be having a few beers outside the Viadukt market (bar is closed for sitting at, but we can take drinks outside in groups of max 15), please come and join me, it'll be nice to catch up before I finally head off.

I remember the sign you made for my office back in '06, shortly after I arrived in Zurich. Many good times at our Venture Cocktail events. I think we both hung out and had drinks with EFs esteemed creator late into the night after the others went home... Watched you build your original cheese shop and then launch in Viadukt steps away from our flat. And I remember your horses and dogs up in the mountains! Happy to hear you are on to another chapter. Best of luck, my friend!
