Re: Time to say goodbye.

Man, I just got here, and you're already leaving? Even before I had a chance to get any proper cheese?

I met the love of my life at a "mature" age...chucked everything in California to move to Alsace and Munich for him. My family thought I was nuts. More than 20 years and 7 countries later, he is still the love of my life.

Best of luck in your pursuit of happiness. May the force be with you.

Best of luck for the future, and I totally understand about doing business in the Brexit era as I got stung with a 280 euros for a box sent to me from UK to my friends house in France.

I never met you, but I enjoyed one of your cheese platters over Christmas and wish you all the best for the future.

Gouda is rubbish mind you, you will need to pop across the border into Belgium for proper cheese ;-)

Re: Time to say goodbye.

It was great to meet you when you came to Bern for our little dinner club.

I wish you every happiness in finally being together with your love full-time, and every success with your book! Post here when it's published and you'll have a stack of orders, I'm sure!

And this is why I love EF. There are real, fantastic people behind the screen and it's worth taking time to meet them.

Re: Time to say goodbye.

In my 4 years of living in England I did not learn as much about British cheese as in the few minutes you spent explaining things to me the few times I visited your shops. I learnt to love cheese in England, but I learnt about cheese here thanks to you.

Best of luck and enjoy your new adventure!

Re: Time to say goodbye.

All the best for your next adventure. You picked a great country for it (yes, I know it was not mainly the country but you sure got lucky).

Thanks so much for baking crumpets for me and later take them on stock from the UK after stalling for a while (guess they sold well after all)! It was highly appreciated and I shall not forget it.

The last few times I've shopped from you, you were not there and since Corona I admit Zurich kind of moved further away somehow. There are many things on my menu which I got to know through your shop and you're sales abilities to present them even when not asked for (logically not asked for if unknown), some I even produce myself now (chilli-jam) and others will always have your name (well, grumpy) on them like Lemon Curd for example.

Good luck, bye, bye.

Re: Time to say goodbye.

I remember my first 'encounter' on EF, commenting that Duddleswell Cheese isn't from West Sussex. (Duddleswell is East Sussex but the High Weald Dairy that processes it is West Sussex). We first met at the MŲvenpick wine and cheese event in Zug, December 2008. Many meetings since then have added to the experience of my visits to Switzerland and led to quite a few new friendships. Your impact goes well beyond cheese.

Re: Time to say goodbye.

Ah yes, the famous British Cheese Centre guy. Many, many moons ago I met you on one of the most random days of my life during which I was passing through Zurich train station and decided to check out the cheese stall I had heard about on EF, accidentally crashed a wedding reception for two EF members that was taking place at the aforementioned cheese stall, happened to be carrying my bagpipes with me and ended up playing them in the main hall of the train station for the happy couple while in the background world cup football fans were making a huge ruckus about some match Switzerland were playing in, ended up having wayyyyy too much beer (because everyone wants to buy the piper a drink), missed the last train back to Lausanne, and ended up sleeping on the couch of a random EF member who took pity on me. Caught the first train back in the morning and still made it to work on time. Very, very bleary eyed, still in the clothes of the previous day, vaguely smelling of beer... and carrying a set of bagpipes.

Memorable, but not a day I'd relive.

But the cheese was great! Wishing you every happiness in the next exciting chapter of your life.

Deep Purple, the image appreciated as was not able to visit the Viaduckt market in Zurich.

It was around that time I recall Grumpy had photos of his freedom chickens in the mountains.

I don't know why many of you insist on posting photos trying to deceive us.!

Most of us longer term posters know what grumpy looks like from everytime he posts.

Hasn't changed nor aged a bit over the years, looks exactly the same!

Ha! I remember almost a year ago already in the first lockdown I ran into you in front of the Markthalle during my last days in Zurich while transferring my apartment, had already moved the family to NL, and you mentioned your plans to also move that way, happy you are finally going for it! Good luck with the move and your new endeavors, especially if they will also involve British cheese 😋, and do get in touch if you pass by Delft, we will take you out for a beer or two!!

After 15 years of living in Switzerland, Iím leaving next week for the Netherlands. Itís been a rather hectic rollercoaster of a ride, in fact it feels more like 25 years! I joined EF just some months after it was started by Mark and I was lucky to have met him a few times before his untimely death.

From running a graphics company in London to breeding Arabian horses on Flumserberg, I finally settled down and opened a cheese shop in ZŁrich (yes, the British Cheese Centre), launching the original online version on EF in November 2007. But the last 2 years have been tough, exhaustion and burn out for me, and then Covid which really hurt sales, and now Brexit is causing massive problems for food exporters in the UK. Also, for almost 6 years Iíve had a long distance relationship with my Dutch lass over there, and because of Covid, we havenít seen each other for 6 months.

Iíll turn 60 this year and quite frankly Iíve run out of energy and drive. The cheese shop is in good hands with new owners, younger and more energetic than me but Iíll still be involved in the background as a consultant to help them out.

So, thanks all EF members who have been great customers and friends over the years, I remember those early years of Ploughmans Lunches in Rapperswil, I couldnít have done it all without you. And if any of you love Dutch cheese, well, Iíll see what I can do.

But right now, Iím looking forward to more time like this!
Wishing you Godspeed !!
