Time to say goodbye.

After 15 years of living in Switzerland, Iím leaving next week for the Netherlands. Itís been a rather hectic rollercoaster of a ride, in fact it feels more like 25 years! I joined EF just some months after it was started by Mark and I was lucky to have met him a few times before his untimely death.

From running a graphics company in London to breeding Arabian horses on Flumserberg, I finally settled down and opened a cheese shop in ZŁrich (yes, the British Cheese Centre), launching the original online version on EF in November 2007. But the last 2 years have been tough, exhaustion and burn out for me, and then Covid which really hurt sales, and now Brexit is causing massive problems for food exporters in the UK. Also, for almost 6 years Iíve had a long distance relationship with my Dutch lass over there, and because of Covid, we havenít seen each other for 6 months.

Iíll turn 60 this year and quite frankly Iíve run out of energy and drive. The cheese shop is in good hands with new owners, younger and more energetic than me but Iíll still be involved in the background as a consultant to help them out.

So, thanks all EF members who have been great customers and friends over the years, I remember those early years of Ploughmans Lunches in Rapperswil, I couldnít have done it all without you. And if any of you love Dutch cheese, well, Iíll see what I can do.

But right now, Iím looking forward to more time like this!

NOooo, you can't! I always thought you'd be here for ever.

Well anyway. enjoy your 'retirement', I'm sure you won't be sitting around doing nothing for very long. Best of luck with whatever you turn your hand to next.

I hope you'll stick around on EF for a while yet?

Bonne chance, and all the best. I truly admire people who are prepared to follow their hearts, their fate- even when things have gone wrong in the past. Bravo- you will be sorely missed- but I am so happy for you x

Mike, thank you. For the hot cross buns, and teaching me how to prepare them.

And the Irish Whiskey Cheddar.

Until we meet again, it is a very small world.

Edited to add. And the Strawberry Gin!

Hang on. I saw you in Pickwicks a few years ago and you were definitely younger than me then...

Fine. Go off with your bit of fluff.

Best of luck to you and your "better half" Mike! The Cheese Shop won't be the same without you but I am sure the new owners are really happy to have you on hand as a consultant. Enjoy your new adventure in The Netherlands - and good for you for making a change

Re: Time to say goodbye.

Dear Mike

Thanks for taking the time to say goodbye and explain your story. I understand your decision and am glad you have a bright future ahead of you. Thanks for bringing that British feeling to ZŁrich. You've brought many smiles to your customers and friends while drinking a pint from "home."

You'll be sorely missed in ZŁrich and on EF but I applaud you for your decision.

Take care and thanks again for letting us be part of your dream come true.

Wait! What? You're leaving us!

Only met you a few times, but it was always a pleasure - and the food was good too. Best wishes for your new life and don't be a stranger. That's the beauty of the internet; we can all keep in touch no matter where we are in the world. In the meantime and thanks for all the goodies we've had over the years.
