Unwanted Furniture> Last Resort options (Zug)

Hi all,

lots of threads on selling items, giving them away etc. but this a "last resort" question.

Biggest items are Ikea shelves, bed, desk, rug, ... all in good condition. But my question is a general one... how do I get rid?

Assume I:
  • Don't drive or have a van/car
  • Tried to sell on Ricardo/Tutti/eBay/... etc
  • Posted on EF items for sales, free etc
  • Checked local Okihoff
  • Posted card in local supermarket
  • Searched this forum for tips...

Troc etc. don't want Ikeas stuff even if it's "like new", HIOB not close to me, house-clearance.ch wont come this far from Basel...

So, if I have unwanted items still... and they need to be gone as I am moving out, and a search for local (Zug) clearance companies turns up empty because all the rich people here don't want second-hand... ideas?

I'd pay to have things gone at this point but not found anyone.

If I leave a flat here, what happens if I leave stuff (I have cellar storage out the way of the final cleaning), will the landlord just charge me? Quite honestly that would be ok if it's not a huge amount $$$$$$$

In the UK people just fly-tip or burn stuff... not here so I want to be responsible

Just hire a man with a van to do it for you, plenty of them advertise on EF. Or you can advertise yourself for one in the Jobs Offered section.

Sorry hire a man to do what? "Take the stuff away" no questions asked? If it's that easy I'll be very happy.

Well yes... people do things for money, for the right price. Pay them enough to make it worth their while and they will collect your stuff and either take it away to sell or take it to be disposed of. I'm not sure why you would see this as unlikely.

Have you also contacted the local Brockihaus to see if they would be interrested?

So simple I'm feeling stupid for asking I guess the "for the right price" is the Swiss catch ....

Re: Unwanted Furniture> Last Resort options (Zug)

Did you contact the brockenhaus ?

They take furniture, but you have to deliver it there.

As a last resort you have to rent a container to get rid of it, when nobody wants it.

As a suggestion, consider searching on tutti.ch on keyword "räumung" within Ct. Zug:

Facebook marketplace.
Put the price of 0, first come first served, and it will all be gone in 2 days.

Re: Unwanted Furniture> Last Resort options (Zug)

There is at least one person advertising white van type services here on the EF but you might be better off getting somebody local to save on time and petrol costs . Alternatively look at hiring a van and doing it yourself . I did that once . Just one short round trip and I used so little petrol that the gauge was still on full tank so I didn’t even need to fill it back up . If you don’t drive you maybe have a friend who will do it for you for a beer or two (to be consumed after , not before )

If no Brocki wants the furniture bring it to the recycling center. You pay a small fee there (they charge by weight ) but in many Gemeindes you get free vouchers so if you have one of those you won’t have to pay .

I also understand Ikea take back old Ikea stuff , so that might be worth looking into as well .

They weren't interested... that surprised me but maybe because it's Ikea?

Good tip by amogles on the recycling center! Might need it myself for one tough piece when I am moving out.

IKEA has a policy where you can dispose of your old IKEA furniture at their stores. I believe you pay CHF 10/item. You can also rent trucks from IKEA.

My advice would be to rent a man with a van, have them load all the stuff in that van, and drive to the IKEA in Rothenburg (nearest to Zug) and unload all the stuff there. My guess is you are looking at an all-in cost of around CHF 300-400 (cost of van per hour/loading/unloading/IKEA disposal fee).

Re: Unwanted Furniture> Last Resort options (Zug)

If you're in an apartment, you could put a flyer into your neighbours' letterboxes to let them know you've got freebies to give away? Tutti.ch and anibis.ch are both excellent sites and am assuming you've revisited your "sales" listings to show now a 0 price? Am also assuming you've tried a "1 franc buy it now" sale on ricardo? For the pain of financial penalty by your landlord (who for sure will charge on the hefty cost of removing your stuff for you), it might be worth putting aside your FB views just this once to utilise the marketplace...Good luck!

Most Schneider recycling centres offer a Grümpelbus. Basically for a fixed price (see link) you or a friend hire the van and everything you fill the van with is sorted & recycled for free.

Re: Unwanted Furniture> Last Resort options (Zug)

If it was advertised free and like new I or someone like me would most likely pick it up. I often buy stuff like a vintage wardrobe for 5chf, then get offered other Ikea stuff for free when I turn up, quite often I take a lot of stuff. The van I use is off the road at the moment so not offering this as a service!

Re: Unwanted Furniture> Last Resort options (Zug)

- as mentioned, man with a van
- rent a car, hire a driver. Basically the same as above except you do the work
- wait for the next SperrGutSammlung, if any or done covering your area, and put them out for the garbage collectors to pick stuff up. Make sure you meet the criteria (location, day/time you put it out, size, waste stamps, etc)

People may hesitate to react to your "for free" ads without knowing the pickup location, perhaps update your profile.

Re: Unwanted Furniture> Last Resort options (Zug)

If you go with the man-with-a-van route ..
Be careful what to ask for..

My experience disposing of a bunch of junk last year, I called a few people advertising the service of collection/disposal and they wanted 500-700 chf..

When i simply hired a guy with a van it was 50chf per hour, we went together to my local decheterie and dumped the stuff.. Total cost 50chf

*Around here way pay an annual garbage tax so we can dispose of anything for free - within reason.
