Bacho has made some interesting contributions
Re: consequences of not deregistering ..

I did this (accidentally - it makes sense looking back that I needed to de-register, but I didn't think of it at the time. Also I had to relocate quickly and unexpectedly in the middle of a project). I wouldn't recommend this.

The consequences may depend on the specific rules of your "Gemeinde" / community and your type of work/living permit.
  • Repeated dunning from your health insurance company requiring payment or proof of de-registering.
  • No proof of de-registration to stop utilities requiring 90 days notice; otherwise you have to pay an extra 90 days while not even having service.
  • Your passport does not show de-registration; you may be stopped and questioned upon reentering Switzerland for leisure.

You may miss out on any tax rebates you may be eligible to receive. Ditto repayment of AVS contributions.

Re: consequences of not deregistering ..

We'll be having to do this soon - does anyone know the notice period? We're in Kanton Zürich. We don't yet have an exact date, anyone know if it's possible to give a sort of provisional notice with exact dates tba?

I think you have to notify your gemeinde at least a week before you leave. Just pop in and ask them. I don't think they'll do anything provisonally but I may be worng.

You could be liable for Swiss income taxes till you de-register.
