Opening a new bank account in Switzerland after having left

OK, so this may sound like an odd thing to try to do, but bear with me. My company has sent me on an assignment to the US - not a permenant transfer, but temporary, albeit long (? 3 years).

So i have accounts with UBS - given all their issues with the IRS, they are insisting I must close these. However, I still have some interests in Switzerland, travel back on business (and pleasure!) from time to time and intend to return in due course.

So, does anyone know of a bank with whom I can open accounts whilst being a resident of the US, ideally remotely???

Thanks for any insights!

Ddejay

Re: Opening a new bank account in Switzerland after having left

Hi

thanks for responding so quickly!

I just had a quick look at postfinance.ch

They seem pretty clearly to want me to show up at a branch with my passport to open an account....

http://www.postfinance.ch/pf/content...chf/apply.html

Does anyone know of a bank who don't require this?

Thanks again!

Ddejay

Do you still have a Swiss residence permit, or did you give it up?

Re: Opening a new bank account in Switzerland after having left

OK thanks

It does seem to require physical presence in a opost office for photocopying passport etc...

- that thread contains a link to the same postfinance website I had looked at too.

If they "froze" it, you could zip over for a small vacation and open
an account. I don't think you will be able to open one online though.

Re: Opening a new bank account in Switzerland after having left

For what it's worth, I had a discussion with my UBS rep on this recently. UBS will not allow swiss account for anyone domiciled in USA (regardless of nationality). However, you can open account at UBS USA, under US banking laws, but not sure if you want this or not. She said other Swiss banks are also following suit, so not sure if anyone is doing this anymore for US domiciled. ie. she had other clients who had swiss mortgages on property here, went to US for a period of time, and had to sell or liquidate mortgage; other swiss banks refused to transfer mortgage or allow new mortgage for US domiciled, guess the risk is too high. Need to be resident in Switzerland to have an account here was the message.

Re: Opening a new bank account in Switzerland after having left

On their website postfinance make it very clear what they're authentification policy is: "You'll receive the account-opening documents and notes on identification requirements by post. In order for us to open your account we need a copy of an official piece of ID. This can be authenticated only at a post office counter or a branch of PostFinance in Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein."

https://www.postfinance.ch/pf/conten...ine/apply.html

What's unclear is whether someone with a power of attorney can do this at the post office on your behalf for example with your "frozen" permit.

You could grant someone this in Switzerland to take care of your Swiss affairs with a Swiss address, this would then allow them to do so.

Perhaps with UBS but not with Postfinance as their website clearly states customers are welcome from the neighbouring countries of Switzerland therefore Andorra, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City State. These customers ID document must also be validated at a Post Office, or Postfinance branch in Switzerland or Liechtenstein only.
