| | Going home, need reliable and cost effective transport [Switzerland to UK]
Hi,
After being here for a year, I have decided that it is time to go home... I brought a lot of stuff with me, and I seem to have accumulated more stuff to add to the stuff I brought!!
Can anyone give me any hints on the most cost effective way to get my stuff across to the UK... I would estimate that it works out at approx 1.5 metric tonnes.
Thanks
Jooles

Hi Jooles
There is quite a bit of info in this link: What's the cheapest way to ship boxes from Switzerland to Australia?
I hope that helps!
By the way, may I ask what you made you decide to return to the UK? We have been here for a couple of months and the jury is still out. You may well also have seen lots of lively debate about the pros and cons of life both here and in the UK on this site!
Anyway, wishing you all the best in the future!

Hi Nicolas,
I came here for three reasons, and now two of these reasons have dissappeared into thin air... which only leaves me one reason to be here, and I can learn german at home.
I have found it a difficult place to assimilate into... I came here on my own (not the original plan) and I miss my friends and family.
If you want a more indepth conversation, I think we can talk through a private messaging area?

what is 1.5 tonnes in box or furniture terms? That's a large truck, I'd say. That's something like a 3 bedroom apartment or home, furniture and everything, right?
Look for Luker Bros via search; they're often over and therefore would likely be able to help you out.

I have contacted them for a quote and they will get back to me, and yes basically I will need a van... some of the stuff just can't really be boxed.

Hi Jooles
I'm driving back with an almost empty van this weekend, can't take any more than about 1000 Kg (and maybe less depending on the bulk). If this will be any help, PM me with the addresses and I'll give you a price, it will be less than a commercial operation.

Might be a long shot, but there are a lot of folks offering lifts/vans/etc. going back to the UK from France; you might be lucky and find someone willing to deviate through Zch. See under Totalfrace.com forum and then "favours offered and wanted". Sorry it didn't work - for me it would be the other way around!

You could provide the space and he could provide the fuel for the trip. Talk about a win/win.
I will probably be doing something similar to this in a half a year or more. Depends on when we leave here. We have some white goods that my sister-in-law will probably want and the only way will be to rent or find someone who has a Van/truck going to the UK. Fun, fun.
Good luck,
Brian.

Hi,
Thanks everyonefor you advise and help... At this point perhaps I should tell you that I come from the Isle of Man, and so that may makeit alittle more tricky.
Grumpygrapefruit.... Thank you for your kind offer, but I don't plan on going back till the end of June(ish) time.
Evianers, I shall look into the France thing, and see what transpires, ta!
And Brian aka clangers... What are you planning on doing? When are you planning on going and how much space do you have?
Thanks guys for being so helpful

I'm not sure if it will help, but you can email Kevin at info@moveurstuff.co.uk
He does relocation from the UK to Switzerland and is reasonably priced.

Cheers John, I am afraid a car is not big enough to take all this stuff, and I do have a motorbike, and probably that's enough transportation for me for now.
Marz, I have emailed Kevin and I'll see what comes back, thanks

Jooles | | | | | Try this guy for a price; he organises freight:
Fred Burri
Tran Sped AG
Telephone 044 866 28 28
He works for Trans Sped AG and is a Yorkshire man married to Swiss girl and helped me out when my Italian Freight Company screwed up and had my furniture stuck at the border in Basle for a couple of days.

I could have sworn he had a Yorkshire accent
I gather you have used him for freight then?
Are they any good becuase I was going to use him possibly in the future?
Basically my Italian freight company did not fill the declaration that my furniture had left the UK so Swiss customs would not let the lorry in becuase "had no proof where the goods had come from".

He speaks fluent English with a lancy accent for sure. Yes, I have used them a couple of times but only for customs clearance, not freight. Not really cheap but they are very efficient & helpful.
