I'd suggest hiring at resort, although it's a bit more expensive than from Migros or wherever, but at least you can take the boots back to change them if they hurt or don't quite fit. If you like skiing, buy your gear as soon as you've made your mind up - certainly having comfortable boots is very useful even if you decide to continue hiring skis.

You need to buy goggles and will need to wear warm, waterproof trousers, gloves and jacket - doesn't have to be specifically for skiing, although a good pair of ski pants will save you getting snow down your bum when you fall over!. Take a scarf and woollen hat too, and a pair of sunglasses and sunscreen.

There are bags of places to ski to from lausanne, you should take advantage of the Snow'n'Rail deal (brochure at the station or online). Good places to head for as a beginner would include Villars or Leysin.
