try another brand like IWC.
Rolex is so conventional and you'll be always "yet another guy with a rolex".
100% agree, Rolex is a bit overdone. With so many beautiful, creative and high-spec watches available, why go for a Rolex?
Very me too IMO.

Thanks man, all started when my original post was moved from an old thread to this one and the mod put the title...taking some of you to the confusion

My question still stands.
Do you know any store in London where I could buy it with a better price than here? Apart from the airport.
I would suggest getting a Rolex from a reputable "grey market" dealer -- places like watchmaxx.com and authenticwatches.com. They sell the real thing at larger discounts because they're not authorized dealers who are required to sell their watches at the retail price or close to it. However, the drawback is that, unlike authorized dealers, their watches do not have the manufacturer's warranty (which is not that relevant IMO because the watches are high quality and unlikely to break, and also these websites will provide you with their own warranty instead).

They're nice watches. Why should he care what other people wear, so long as it makes him happy?

I suppose that you can be happy only as much the weight the 3 letters "him" can carry.
What I mean, Rolexes are expensive plain watches, why would someone worth his salt buy one of those?

1. high quality construction
2. accurate timekeeping
3. timeless designs / not gaudy or overly flashy
4. collector's item

Re: Help me decide on these Rolex watches and where to buy

Rolex are not expensive in comparison to other luxury brand watches; they actually are the best value in the luxury realm. The quality of their movements is so good that in the watch industry they are considered the benchmark for accuracy and reliability. I've seen 10-15 year old Rolexs that still run better, unserviced, than new production high end pieces touting COSC certification and whatnot. Few other brands even make their own movements, and those that do are almost automatically out of the Rolex price range (though they may have some cheaper models with standard commercial movements). The several 'tractor' movements commonly used such as ETA 2892, Valjoux (ETA) 7750, or even the high end F. Piguet stuff runs well off the assembly line but can't hold a candle to Rolex for longterm reliability.

I don't really like the looks, and like even less the style stigma they carry, but if I had X amount of cash to buy a watch and a Rolex fit in that budget it would be hard to justify another brand logically. Rolex=Honda, most other brands=vintage Jaguar.

-A good friend of mine is a seriously clever engineer and watch movement designer, and he's restoring a '71 Jag at the moment. So much for logic.

Done!

I found a store in the UK willing to give me a nice discount plus the Tax refund...and I've reserved it.

Thank you all for your help and thoughts.

well in the centre of london you have quite a few "goldsmiths" (chain of jewlers) and "watches of switzerland" - who also have 2nd hand watches iirc give one of them a go.

http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/?cm_mmc=...FUjxzAodyk8MpQ

http://www.watches-of-switzerland.co.uk/

eta goldsmiths wont give prices of rolex online, so you'll need to phone one of the branches
Goldsmiths owns mappin and webb now. It's rather amusing where both shops have prime real estate and they don't want to give the shop to another jewellers so they just keep both.

To the OP. I get a 10% company discount at a shop in Neuchatel called Michaud. They have a whole window dedicated to Rolex and I'm not about to buy one any time soon so PM me if you are interested

I met a lot of Rolex owners and they all had one single thing in common: They were all working in sales...
Just out of curoisity I've checked in one of the largest online forums for Rolex and I found a thread that goes against your theory/experience mentioned above:

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthrea...=42184&page=44

That is the last page of the long thread...and it is amazing how many different proffesionals own a Rolex ...there is even a police officer! Can you believe it?

Glad you found what you wanted. Personally, I would prefer another of the famous, but not so well-known brands, like Ulysse Nardin, Baume & Mercier, or Parmigiani - like Economisto said, not to be just another guy with a Rolex. But that's me - and if you have the watch YOU want, that's great, enjoy.

Some big shots are some sort of a "Zuhälter"

Rolexes might be comfi to wear, but the cheap hollow metall wristband makes noise. I do think Rolex look like a pufter watch, a real watch for gay people. Even those Submariners, especial the Gold-Steel version. It looks like it was designed by a pufter for Gadaffi or Abdullah al Saud.
