I can assure you that I would have reacted differently under circumstances. Picture either myself having gastric virus and twisting in pain or DB walking with broken toe and all of the sudden you face a situation of two-meter tall rascal hudlum in a dark street yelling at his miniskirt dressed little cute mistress with tears running down her chicks that smear her sexy makeup. I feel like helping this little helpless beauty and image of reward received already blinds my mind... But I'm hesitating because of all a sudden I saw a glittering long object resembling knife sticking out of his belt. As much as my heroism tells me go for it tiger but my mind says no... So I cover my face, pick up a cellphone and quietly dial 911...

Learn to judge the situation not the others!
Would you still do the same, if you know that rascal hudlum would use the glittering long object on the poor girl and it might be too late till the police will arrive?

Would you be able to live with yourself?

Re: Woman getting manhandled by her husband?

I would have yelled "hey"! I also would have kept a distance in case he would have gone for me. Probably would have taken out my cell and at least pretended to have called the police. Sometimes being interrupted in a violent rage helps one to calm down a bit. Makes the woman feel she's not alone either.

I'm not a fan of ignoring situations but I don't want to put myself at risk either.

Would go for a psycho under any circumstances!

In my case notion of "child" would probably invoke supernatural heroic powers. Honestly, I wouldn't want to face such choice and luckily this isn't subject here.

Would anyone have taken pictures with their mobile and then called the police?

I can live with myself without any problem. I am not going to hold myself responsible for the actions of a murderer. If I had a gun then I might act but shooting him could get me life sentence. It's a complicated world.

I hear taking photos drains the battery faster so I would not take pictures in case I need the phone to get help after I get beaten up.

I hear shooting a gun makes a loud bang and makes some people sh!t their pants. That would make it really difficult if they need to run afterwards.

Tell you what, take that car your mother in law is offering to buy, so you dont have to witness such unpleasant scenes on the road.

Re: Woman getting manhandled by her husband?

I know this is an aside, but I was struck by the OP's choice of words: "Woman getting manhandled by her husband" and that the fact it was violence between people who knew each other that prevented him/her reporting it.

Domestic violence is a crime. In this case, one which involves a child. The OP's conscience is obviously troubling them, or they wouldn't have posted. I agree it would've been counter-productive to wade in, but if there is any information the OP feels they could give the police, please do - for the sake of the child.

In the UK, we have Crimestoppers, which is an anonymous phoneline for people who don't want to get personally involved. We also have two women killed by domestic abuse each week in England and Wales. Turning away just because 'it's a domestic' shouldn't be an option.

Well lot of the folks here are just pedantic. They are just homing on domestic and violent immigrant aspect fo it. Whereas its about an abuse scenario which can turn violent and someone get hurt.

Be it doemstic, between a couple or some friends or random strangers just because one jumped the queue. If its just some lip being given, irrespective if its husband and wife or 2 friends or some random strangers then one can ignore it and it might defuse in a while and wife will go back home with the husband, friends will be friends again and the strangers will be on their way.

But if their is a possibility of the situation turning violent and chances of someone getting hurt then some kind of intervention is necessary.

What kind of intervention is necessary depends on the person in question. One can call the police and then look away, as to not to witness an ugly scene and feelign guilty for the rest of their life. Or if someone has the balls to confrotn the aggressor then it should be done tactfully.

One needs to size up the aggressor. If he can be intimidated by the Godsend saviour then he can shout at him and walk towards him in aggressive stance (not always a good idea)

Smarter approach would be to say something silly or irrelevant trying to deflect his attention from the victim and his aggression. Direct provocation or reprimand might aggravate him more and sometimes people do things in rage what they would'nt do in their normal state of mind. Once his attention is momentarily deflected then he can be gently but firmly told to take it easy and try to solve the problem in a civilised way.

I know its easier said then done and depends heavily on correctly analysing and judging the situation within in a matter of few seconds, but thats how I think.

Re: Woman getting manhandled by her husband?

And yes, no stupid heroics. And yes it DOES make you feel a lot better to know you've saved somebody's life. I can't bear to think how I would have felt if I had read in the paper the next day that the old man had been found dead the next morning - had I not shouted at them (from the safety of my car) and phoned the police.

I wrote before, imagine it is your own daughter, wife, grand-child or grand- parent. Imagine now a thread here saying 'My English daughter was beaten up by her OH in Switzerland, and the Swiss passer-bys just gawped and did nothing'.

Re: Woman getting manhandled by her husband?

Dear OP, you obviously feel bad for not doing anything at all, otherwise why start this thread in the first place?
You did what you thought it was wise, for you and your family, but that's not necessarily the correct thing you should have done. End of story.

Re: Woman getting manhandled by her husband?

I think some of you are missing what I actually feel. Let me make absolutely clear that I feel no guilt as it was not me who roughed up the woman. I can't be responsible for other people's bad actions or for the result of their bad deeds.

It was not a situation where I could have spoken to the guy like dear Wasted was suggesting.

So why did I start the thread? Well it was a recent event so just like the bird shit thread I felt like talking about it. The incident just reminded me of how some people are in the world and also how difficult it is to react when your normal walk to the bus stop suddenly becomes something else.

Ultimately it is the woman victim who has to decide what she is going to do about it all and not me.

So do I sound like a cold hearted coward? Maybe but self preservation always comes first for me. What other people think of me has never been high on my priority list

Exactly. Like i mentioned it before: Woman getting manhandled by her husband? [with update]

It's always good to see how other folks in OP's shoes would react if faced the same situation. Good topic starts interesting drivel and that's what makes this site vibrant

No, some things are either bad or good. No relativism here as far as I see these things. Maybe it is fair to add that I'm a woman.
