We now have a bed that we need to put into storage, but I don't really want to put our mattress into storage without some sort of protector on it.

The mattress will contain moisture, which if enclosed will encourage mould to grow. For health reasons you might want to just store it in a clean environment, or simply throw it away. You can buy cheap cotton mattress covers in Ikea.

Mattress covers aren't sealed... just protective against things like splintery floors. Unfortunately, we still need the mattress so it isn't feasible to get rid of it and buy another later on.

good point, but i would still put it in a plastic or similar and just leave the "top side" open, so it can breath, but doesn't get dirty underneath.
