Re: Help select Swiss watch brand

Are Fossil Swiss?

I can see there is some sort of building here but whether they make them here or it is an office I don't know?

I bought a Fossil blue and it has been a great looking, reliable and very tough wearing watch (I am too lazy to remove it when climbing) so the glass is a little bit marked now because of that but that's my best best everyday watch to date.

Fossil AFAIK is just a high-street brand name rather than a watch maker.

Ahhh... but Swiss watchmakers hold their breath while assembling them: http://www.montblanc.com/products/14.php

Not trying to wind you up, just having fun. Just goes to show that associating nationalities with companies doesn't always work in spite of what they'd have us think, eh?

Sure. But I'm one of those people who struggle with the use of "residency" as grounds for selecting players to play for your team...

Hello.

I dont know, maybe this topic is wrong for my question, but i am try ask. I want buy watch (not expensive, 500-600CHF maximum), but i dont know much info about good brands. Can anyone suggest me some brands with good quality and my budget?

Regards,
Oleg.
Tissot - they're probably the only one of the world-renowned watch makers that offer high-quality time pieces in that price-range. Swatch make good quality watches but they're really a mass-producer and don't scream quality like Tissot does.

Re: Help select Swiss watch brand

and BP are in London but they dont produce English Oil! I thought the thread was asking for Swiss watch makers not swiss watch domiciles. As for saying that a brand is trying to make themselves look older, what is wrong with producing watches in the Swiss capital of watchmakers? I guess it easier to be cynical. In any case we are well past the Chf500 budget as the writer told us he only earns usd350 per month (or was it euros) and therefore the poor chap cant stretch to a MB.

Re: Help select Swiss watch brand

If you want new, I'd go Certina over Tissot. If you plan on getting second hand, I'd search for an Omega (quartz of course).

No, but they are (or were) a UK-based company that obtained oil from around the world - after all, you can't get that much oil from around the UK anyway. They also don't sell their oil as based on a premium "UK quality" do they and didn't move to cash in on perceived value of a particular area associated with manufacturing of oil?

But, but, but... isn't it even more cynical for a German company to set up a company in CH and say "look, we're a Swiss watch maker"?

I certainly think so.

For me if one is buying a "Swiss watch", you are also buying into the company's or country's heritage and associated expertise or quality in this field - which to me is not just about it's location of manufacture.

I suspect they sell Brent Crude at the premium Brent Crude commands. We have oil in the UK (ask the sporrans) theyre trying to nick it back through devolution!

Absolutely. That's the point, it isn't sold as Dubai Crude or WTI, which is exactly what companies like MB are trying to cash in on.

Ok. Lets just imagine that we are not talking about Mont Blanc for a second.

Imagine there is a Chinese luyury brand that wants to start production of high end watches. They set up their shop in le Locle, put a waving Swiss flag on their website and "dedicate" their flag ship watches to some famous watchmakers in Swiss history - in order to be able to put a nice picture of him in your shop windows or website. You buy an old run down shop with some history, call your collection "1858" and put a lot of photos of 19th century men with funny beards on the website. Since your customers are mainly in China, they will never know that this men were not connected to your company back then at all and would probably be quite unhappy to serve as advertisement for fake pedigree of your brand.

In short: This is exactly what Richemont is doing with Mont Blanc. They sell the watches mainly in Asia and faked a lot of image into the brand. If it wasn't a Swiss company doing so, but really a Chinese one, the entire industry would be up in arms...

I actually love their pens, but they are crossing many lines of somewhat ethical marketing lately. Dedicating a golden pen to Ghandi was more cynical than I can ever be.

Re: Help select Swiss watch brand

I disagree. BP produces oil (well doesnt produce of course) extracts oil all over the world and they then sell the relevant product as whatever quality and description that it commands. If i buy a Swiss Beer Company, should I sell it as English beer because I happen to be English. I dont quite follow the logic especially in these days of multinationals. I think it is the product and where it is produced that warrants the description - ie if MB were importing tut from China and labelling it as swiss watches then i would agree, but as they are producing in Switzerland , employing Swiss workers, then I think they are quite justified in labelling it a Swiss product.

Touché

...while I agree that CH may be seen as expensive by some, last time I checked, even a Big Mac wasn't seen as a product sold as a luxury item - even if they use premium beef...
