Re: Help: Looking for hard drive data recovery specialist

Kroll / Ontrack / Datenrettung.ch definitely has a fantastic reputation for salvaging whatever can be salvaged.

Other causes may be a dead controller, a faulty power interface, a stuck read/write armature or seized bearings. Any one of these mean the platters are still intact and can be moved to another hard drive without loss of data.

As crazy as it seems , the fridge answer may well bring the drive to life long enough to transfer the contents if the bearings or armature have seized.
Aye I've done this using a steamed up bathroom (removes dust!) and a donor drive, took the platter out of one put it in the donor, fired up the drive and recovered the data. Tricky but can be done!

Re: Help: Looking for hard drive data recovery specialist

I have tried this company last year for a colleague.

They will pickup the HDD for a free diagnostic of the problem and you will receive a confirmation together with the offer.

The total cost of recovery was around 800CHF FOR A 500MB of data in a new 2Tb HDD. Photos, videos, documents and email backups were properly restored.

Re: Help: Looking for hard drive data recovery specialist

A company based in Canton FR was profiled in the Swiss French business paper L'AGEFI yesterday. It is Suricate Solutions ( http://www.suricate.ch/) . The website is pretty minimalist but they have a contact form.

They offer data recovery from hard drives, USB keys, SD cards and mobile phones (including the memory chip). They have a free cost estimate service where they scan the item and send you the list of files they can recover and the cost. You then decide go/no-go.

An idea of cost for a phone was between CHF 150-400.

Based on that terribly amateurish mickey mouse website that is lacking in any useful information or references I would not trust them them with restoring my data.
