Poll: how to resolve our energy needs?

We have all had time now to think about nuclear power and the problems it has brought in Japan, but what are the solutions? The greens tell us that we should use alternatives, yet wind and sun are not exactly abundant here in central Europe, nor do we have much wave power! At university I learnt that the steam generating power stations are only 30% efficient, and that we also lose 30% of the generated power on the grid delivery system, in the form of heat after overcoming the resistance in the copper cables.

I have suggested some outrageous answers, but maybe the egg heads on the Forum can help us save the planet?

shamelessly stolen from a mate

A 41 year old nuclear reactor gets hit by a 9 magnitude earthquake, then slammed with a 20ft tall swell, followed by an explosion due to the buildup of hydrogen gas that blows off the roof of the building, an the core is intact and contained.... and you are telling me nuclear power isn't safe?

There should be a clear and stated investment from all nations into Nuclear Fusion, solve this one and free clean limitless energy is available.

Forget nuclear, wind or renewables you just don't need it with fusion as a replacement. Someone suggested 50 years, I hope this is much closer and with the right investment it would bring this down to 20 years possibly.

Geothermal is an option to reduce reliance on gas and electricity for heating. Hate to say it but nuclear is the last resort.

Depends on how much money you plough into it the more money the quicker the result.

Then again too many people have too much interest in making cash on non-renewables to allow fusion to appear quickly.

Looks like you need to move to Greece, they have pretty windmills on the islands. The fog here in February will turn your lights out!

Using less is certainly part of the solution.

Re: Poll: how to resolve our energy needs?

I'm a solar man myself. The way I see it, the world's getting warmer anyway. True, solar is currently insanely expensive and inefficient, but there's a lot of desert in the world, and if every penny the world spends on oil was diverted to solar power we could blanket the sahara and some other deserts in solar cells in no time. And we'd really only have to spend the money once. Then we could roll around in electric cars too. We just need the price of oil to reach 200 USD/bbl and stay there for a while and all our energy needs will be solved.

Or this
