Where can I buy books in English in Zurich?

I went to a couple of big bookstores in Zurich but they have a very limited offer of books in english. Any good tip about it? I am mainly looking for novels.
I found several posts about buying on line but I still prefer to go to a bookstore and spend some time looking for new ideas.

Have you tried the Orrell Fuessli English bookstore on Bahnhofstrasse? At the corner of Rennweg.

You could do worse than a simple search on here for 'books zurich' if you would be happy with second hand ones. Maybe you cannot browse through the shelves this way, but you wouldn't be forking out too much money if you bought a couple you weren't too keen on.

I hardly ever find time to go shopping for books, or they just don't have what I'm after. I usually order from this online bookshop. Hope that helps.

Orrel Füssli are quite good, at least if you're interests are too eclectic. It's a pity that Stäheli pulled out as they had much more choice when this shop was still run by them. I suppose that for any specialised demands you just order online these days. I also tend to bring heaps of books back with me whenever I'm in Blighty.

I've found the Orell Füssli on Bahnhofstrasse good as well - don't miss out on the 1st floor and basement. The selection isn't as good as you get in a London Waterstones, but I wouldn't expect it to be.

English books are expensive out here, unless 2nd hand.

Hi,

of course you could just buy a Kindle and buy the books straight from Amazon. No postage and enormous choice. A lot cheaper than buying books here.

Have fun

Martin

Re: Where can I buy books in English in Zurich?

I guess it is easier to just order online. Not as much fun as browsing but far cheaper.

As for a kindle I just cannot justify paying full price for what is little more than an ascii text file. A right royal ripoff. At least you can sell a book on when finished.

I have bought most of my books at Orrell Fuessli BUT last night I was at the book store at Sihl City. Their novels were around 5 francs cheaper. Not a huge selection but most of the current ones.

Re: Where can I buy books in English in Zurich?

Orell Füssli is the one we go to and I understand the fun of browsing and then buying what you want. Admittedly it is a bit expensive, but all book shops are here (and they want to reintroduce price-fixing here - a referendum or "Volksabstimmung" is being called against this at the moment).

It is also possible to order books through Orell Füssli - we have done that a few times as well (probably silly as we pay more but it is always a fun day out to get some books, sit down for coffee, do a bit more shopping...)

Kindle has pros and cons, and has been discussed exhaustively here before (here for instance but plenty more if you search).

They do polarise opinion but critics never acknowledge the advantages. There is a ton of free and low cost Kindle books out there. I have enough free stuff downloaded to last me a lifetime - literally - and many mainstream new books are discounted, and will only continue to be so. There are aesthetics with a book that you'll never get with a Kindle, but being able to carry round hundreds or thousands of books in your inside pocket is fantastic, especially if you travel. And as a seasoned critic of trying to read books on a computer screen, I'm a convert to way a Kindle (and I guess other e-readers) bridge that gap very well.

And incidentally, it's possible to own a Kindle AND still love to visit bookshops! Why not do both and get all the advantages of both? The shop on Bahnhofstrasse is the best I've found in Zurich, but be prepared to spend extra. Otherwise, Amazon offer a good service to Switzerland without costing much extra than delivery to the UK.

Thanks in advance, great site!

I joined the local library, they have English sections and seem to update the range on a regular basis , it usually costs 40 - 60 chuffs a year
