Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

Because I am well aware of how clothes are made, what they touch, who they touch, how they are packed, where they pass, etc. I wash them all!

No it is a bit like not washing your dishes the first time you take them out of their box....

Well, to be honest when you buy clothes they might be new but they are certainly not clean: they've been handled by god knows how many hands (factory, shop-assistant, etc.) and travelled through most of the world before reaching you.
Yes

Actually, washing some new stuff might be good from the point of view it minimises the chances of dye coming off on someone's nice new cream sofa (inky blue jeans bum print comes to mind).
Yes too

When I was younger, I sometimes used to get a rash after wearing new clothes that hadn't been washed.

I don't get a rash any more but I'll still wash T-shirts etc before wearing them.

My wife washes the kids' clothes before they wear them for the first time.
Yes for this too

Clothes get touched and tried on regularly, and some people, well... just aren't what you'd call clean and savoury.
Oh yes!

I hate to sound harsh, but how will your son build any resistance to anything if everything he wears and touches is sanitized?
This is BS! It is a difference between wearing something who passed in the dust, machines, chemicals, people's hands, people's sweat, people who tries without underwear, people who doesn't wash their hand, body, etc.... and being completely sanitized...

Wash?

Soak overnight in cold water... then wash. Then wear.

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

When I studies law we learned about the legal precedence for clothes (too many years ago to remember case numbers etc). Many years ago a man was burned by chemicals on his new clothes that he wore before washing them. He sued the manufacturer & won his case. Since then all clothes must be fit to wear when bought new without washing.

I don't wash them.

I suppose it's a strange question. A neighbour of mine was shocked to hear I don't wash all new clothes first before wearing. She says they are loaded with chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin.

Well, I do wash underwear first of course. And if something smells like factory I'll wash it too, but I never wash things like socks before wearing them. Am I the only one?

"people who tries without underwear"

Thanks for the mental picture. lol i think im now gonna wash "new" clothes coz i forgot about those people (aforementioned)as they dont exist where i came from. The possibility of staining other clothes/chairs is also a good reason. And of course when it comes to our children, they get enough necessary exposure to germs in the playground.

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

It's called 'sizing'

Quote:
Sizing is necessary because the threads in that shirt you're wearing go through hell. They are spun, wound on spools, unwound onto beams, dipped in a hot bath of chemicals, dried, "busted" on a bust rod, threaded through a comb, and then woven into the fabric that is cut into the shirt you button on in the morning.
Sizing -- the dipping-in-a-hot-chemical-bath stage of the traditional textile process -- allows threads to withstand all the friction and stretching and straining of weaving. The size that soaks into the threads during this process is a solution of starch or PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) -- compounds that coat the threads for lubrication, smooth down any stray fibers, and strengthen the threads.

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

Do any of the "washers" here (never mind the soak-then-washers, I think you're beyond redemption ) actually have any evidence for how dirty clothes bought off the peg in reputable shops actually are, or is this all just hearsay, anecdotes and speculation?

PS: Richdog - what happened to your dog?

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

Lots of chaps I see wear shirts straight out of the packet; neat, stiff fold lines in a perfect square over the chest and the back along with tiny pinholes in the sleeves where they've been attached to the shoulder.

It just says "Wife's away and I can't find a clean shirt in the wardrobe."

OK, so all the washers should also avoid shopping trolleys, door handles, lift buttons, dish cloths, taps, etc etc ad nauseum...

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

I burn my new clothes to get rid of any germs from the shop. I mean, have you seen some of those customers.

I do wash some some tops - I don't like that cheap cloth smell (think aroma d'H&M) and sometimes they've got an itchy feel to them.

Often wash shirts - they tend to be a bit starchy and have fold marks all over them.

Very rarely (if ever) wash anything that lives below the waist.

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

I do wash my clothes before I wear them because of the chemicals, dust, colour ( I once bought a nice pair of jeans, I didn't wash them and then my legs were blue because of the dye) and plus you never know how were the people that tried them before . When I buy something that is red, dark red, dark blue or black, I soak them in cold water with vinegar to prevent the colour going away from the fabric and they look much better when dried.

I only wash new underwear

The good thing about new clothes is that they are already ironed

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

i think not washing would be acceptable for students, singles. But for moms like me, its our job to do that. It doesnt have much (if any) impact on our laundry routine, power/detergent consumption. So why not? Just keep in mind the people who tried those pants with no underwear (they are usually more sexually active (?) but i dunno, maybe that needs another thread).
