Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

I suppose it's a strange question. A neighbour of mine was shocked to hear I don't wash all new clothes first before wearing. She says they are loaded with chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin.

Well, I do wash underwear first of course. And if something smells like factory I'll wash it too, but I never wash things like socks before wearing them. Am I the only one?

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

I don't either. Surely hanging the clothes on the rack in the shop kind of airs them out so any chemicals (Jeez, chemicals in new clothes - what next??) can dissipate?

My money says that there are maybe chemicals on the clothes but are at such low concentrations you probably absorb more harmful stuff walking past a car exhaust pipe but people seem to go doo-lally and obsessive at the thought of the mysterious concoctions that appear in food or clothes.

(sorry .... what are new clothes, again?)

It's a bit like washing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, or cleaning the house before the cleaner arrives.

However, I remember when Carrefour (Suisse) used to have really cheap offers on Levi jeans, and a multitude of fits and sizes started all nicely laid out on big display table type units.
Then, the world and his wife came and rifled through them all looking for their size. Half ended up on the floor, and the rest ended up being man-handled by God-knows how many grubby fingers. If you wear them bareback, then maybe a washing could be in order.
I don't think they're made in US any more (?), so had probably already been handled by 100 Chinamen, by this point.

In answer to the question - as above with a bit of common sense.

Your neighbour wears a tin foil hat right ?

Pop by her bunker and explain that the chemicals she constantly washes her clothes in will have a more detrimental long term effect in her health.

You could also paint some illuminous spots on your face and tell her what a lovely time you had in Japan recently.

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

Well, to be honest when you buy clothes they might be new but they are certainly not clean: they've been handled by god knows how many hands (factory, shop-assistant, etc.) and travelled through most of the world before reaching you.

So while I don't really care about it for myself, I usually wash my son's new clothes before making him wearing them...

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

Actually, washing some new stuff might be good from the point of view it minimises the chances of dye coming off on someone's nice new cream sofa (inky blue jeans bum print comes to mind).

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

When I was younger, I sometimes used to get a rash after wearing new clothes that hadn't been washed.

I don't get a rash any more but I'll still wash T-shirts etc before wearing them.

My wife washes the kids' clothes before they wear them for the first time.

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

Personally yes, I do http://www.neatorama.com/2010/01/21/...you-wear-them/

Quote:
A lot of people buy clothes and immediately wear them without washing them, but a recent study has come out showing that this can be an unintentionally filthy habit. Good Morning America went to a number of both high-end and low-end retailers and purchased 14 items of clothing, which they then sent to Dr. Philip Tierno, director of microbiology and immunology at New York University, to test. The results were surprisingly disgusting; many of the items had fecal germs on them and one blouse also had vaginal organisms and yeast on it. Some of the samples had many people’s secretions, while others only had one heavily contaminated person’s germs.

While this isn’t usually enough to make you sick, it could be and either way, it is certainly disgusting.
Clothes get touched and tried on regularly, and some people, well... just aren't what you'd call clean and savoury.

I hate to sound harsh, but how will your son build any resistance to anything if everything he wears and touches is sanitized?

No of course not. Think it is a bit much. I don't fear germs. They fear me.

I wash them before wearing if possible, but I'm not obsessive about it, i.e. if i buy something while travelling I probably wear it unwashed.

Well, I guess it's simply a question about where you place the limits... Though I really don't care/mind if he plays in the sand/garden/dirt, I make him wash his hands before eating...

I don't spend my time disinfecting his surroundings (gosh, I have a life!), I think a bit of hygiene never killed anybody, no?!

Re: Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?

I'll wash dark jeans once before wearing them, because regularly the colour comes off on me, my white blouse and/or my furniture. Undies get washed before wearing them as well, everything else definately not.

Washing clothes before you wear them will have no negative effect on a persons immune system. Her son will encounter plenty of germs in the outside world to build up resistance as it is, and I hardly think washing new clothes constitutes "everything he touches".

Even without any germ/faeces/etc etc matter factored into it, washing them first (barring knitwear) makes them softer and less irritable on the skin, which many people are sensitive to.
