Becoming homeless in Lugano

Hi all,

I have come to Lugano looking for a change and a bit of adventure. I have friends nearby in Porlezza, Italy where i worked in the summer of 2005.
I was under the impression that one of those friends would put me up whilst i found work however that hasnt come to fruition.
Im still desperately seeking work whilst paying €50 a night in a cheap hotel. However my funds are quickly running out and im really worried about what will happen to me if i end up out of money and a place to stay.
Im 28 and at the moment feel so stupid for being so naive to think this would work out. As i look at the amazing views of the lake and mountains around me i cant help feeling that these views are not free and will eventually cost me dearly.
In terms of work im in IT in England but also qualified in Plumbing (something i would love to do full time here eventually) but im happy to do anything here for as long as it takes.
But I am wondering what the situatuon would be if i did become homeless and without money here in Lugano? Are there shelters or hostels set up for this situation or would i be deported? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Gav

Buy a ticket back home with your remaining funds, and return with a much better plan ( save up plenty of $$$ first now that you know it is not cheap here ).

And welcome to the forum.

Re: Becoming homeless in Lugano

From our search for work for my boyfriend who is also qualified in IT but doesnt speak italian.... its going to take a long time to find a job here. Ive heard even if you do speak italian it takes a long time!

I would recommend going back home for a bit too otherwise youre going to get broke really fast round here, especially without a place to stay.

I wish i could be more optimistic for you, sorry!

Re: Becoming homeless in Lugano

I have a feeling that our little Tupac disaster is back.
You know, the guy who gambled away his tuition money.
The guy with the girlfriend with lots of cash
The guy looking for a cleaner for his studio apartment while having no money
etc etc etc
Maybe not, but it feels the same

Re: Becoming homeless in Lugano

So instead of going home and working out a better plan, you're going to sit around and wait to run out of money and become homeless? Is that logical?

Why don't you look for a temporary apartment? Much cheaper than a hotel. Or you can also try couchsurfing but you can't stay more than 2 days per home.

But your best bet has already been mentioned. Go home before you run out of money and come up with Plan B.

Re: Becoming homeless in Lugano

Actually, I think Lugano is probably one of the best places to be homeless! I would love nothing more than to take a few months out, scrounge, bum around and sleep under a shady tree.

Think of it as research.

Youth Hostels are also much cheaper. Forgotten what it is in Italian.

Why not apply for work with them - and ask other YHA's in CH - they always need extra staff from Easter onwards, and your plumbing skills will be a real +.

Re: Becoming homeless in Lugano

Lugano has a 'Dormitory Service' for adult Swiss nationals and foreign nationals holding permits B or C who temporarily lack accommodation and find themselves in financial difficulty.Guests are offered a bed, breakfast, toilet and laundry facilities. It's run by the Red Cross, the International Christian Workers Association and INGRADO. 058 866 87 30 (24 hours).

It's your life; if things become desperate and you are determined to stay then you could contact them with or without a permit and see what they have to say for themselves.
