In Sunny Switzerland...

Do you have violent youths, like in the U.K in our village park you can see kids smoking, drinking and doing drugs at the kids park all day every day. Is it the same in Switzerland?

Re: In Sunny Switzerland...

I have not seen any youths here like the ones I see back home. I am not scared when I walk by a group of teenagers here, and usually they will say hello. I would not get that back in the UK, sadly. And I have not seen any 'junkies' either, whereas back home they were everywhere!! I am sure they must be out there somwhere though!!

Re: In Sunny Switzerland...

Sadly, when I go to the park, their is a large amount of teenagers and some adults smoking drugs and even selling it to the younger kids. And this in a Small Cambridgeshire Village.

Well, a lot of the time, they are normally trying to team up to fight the other gang across the village.

Re: In Sunny Switzerland...

Last week in the UK I was walking up a high street and 2 lads who looked like yobbos knocked me - i thought they were going to snatch my bag but instead they kept apologising for not looking where they were going and was I OK - they looked really scary - but were most polite

Don't judge a book by it's cover...

Re: In Sunny Switzerland...

Yeah, I get what you're meaning. But still, in Switzerland do you have the same amount of youths. I've got some questions:

1) Is CH a lot more safer when compared to; Village - Village and City - City.
2) Are the people a lot more relaxed compared to the U.K.

I'll have more questions later.
thanks.

1) In general, there isn't the youth drinking culture in Switzerland at the same level as in the UK. I'm not saying it doesn't exist (Bern and Fribourg stations can be pretty intimidating on Friday/Saturday evenings), but it's generally not as prevalent.
2) No.

Re: In Sunny Switzerland...

Hmmm yes, and no. Generalisations and stereotypes are not really helpful.
Kids are kids. Even here in rural CH, although kids are great overall, they also get drunk at week-ends sometimes and do stupid things. But I'd say overall it is not as bad as the UK.

Last time kids did some minor damage to property in the area, the Maire and a cop visited each and every home and gave them a warning - and got them to share the bill for repairs and do some community clean up. All parents worked WITH the Maire and police and agreed to the kids having to pay our of pocket money and community work. In the UK, many of the parents would have refused to cooperate and said the kids were not responsible, and it was 'society's fault' because they were bored - so that's OK innit!

Hi Kingsam 15. Surely if you live in Geneva, then you already have some experience of living in CH?

Some would argue that living in GE is nothing like living in CH

Re: In Sunny Switzerland...

Violence and trouble happens in every country around the world.

I have not felt unsafe during my visits to Switzerland.

Despite what the media may portray, violence is not widespread across the UK either.

Hop on the S4 from Adliswil to Züri HB, take the Bahnhofquai exit, cross to the corner just opposite the "coop on the bridge". Look in the corner there.

Then hang a left, towards the Landesmuseum. Walk along the side of the Limmat within the grounds of the Landesmusem, in the direction of the Marriot. (Try to avoid standing on any syringe needles during this part of the journey...)

I've lived in the United Kingdom for many years, and my honest opinion is that the media try to water/tone down what actually happens in this country.

A lot of my relatives started work in the youth community care departments of the government and I've heard a lot of bad stories.

Re: In Sunny Switzerland...

I've visited both Geneva and Zurich and they are like 2 completely different countries, Geneva which is on the border of France is typically has a more diverse culture unlike Zurich which is pretty much all-Swiss.

I've got to say, Geneva is like a small international town when compared to somewhere like Zurich which I would class as a Larger version of Bern.

This is often the case. People have heard stories but not actually experienced it themselves.

I have lived in the UK all of my life and experienced very little in the way of violent problems. Even the town where I live, Hastings, is often given a bad reputation. The reality, in my experience, is that far less problems exist.

From my limited experience of Switzerland, and what I have read on EF, Switzerland is generally a safe place if you take the usual common sense precautions that apply everywhere.

Your questions depends heavily on the type of individual you are. You could go on forever asking questions, but experience will be the real teacher. Overall, Switzerland is quite safe with little bits of this and that happening from time to time.
