Where does that rank in the pecking order, compared to a directorship or a chairmanship ?

Only 150k in Zurich?

That's not even enough for coke and escorts!

Ask for a pay raise before you consider to move to the middle of nowhere for a few cents more ...

say one is making 150k+50% bonus in Zurich, and there is a job offer in Basel(of all places). I say of all places, because for a person in his late 20s, young and a foreigner and getting used to the small "city" of ZH was pretty tough...
Did 'mummy and daddy' finally get tired of young Snotleigh Bratleigh Bigtime III dragging their good name through the press and decide to ship young master off to the hinterlands to carouse with the local savages and let their reputation recover?

Re: Another Can I Survive on X Salary Question:=)

Good thread. I'm now looking forward to my next pay review with HR.

Adrian: "So, I want a huge rise to 150,000 plus a bonus of 75,000 CHF a year"

HR: "Why? You're not worth anywhere near that!"

Adrian: "Have a look at this thread on EF *shows URL* Even some random retard on the net gets that salary, and the guy doesn't even know how to type 'Basel' into google!"

HR: "Good point. Oh, and I assume you want some more money for living in Basel which doesn't have an international airport, instead of Zurich"

Adrian: "Obviously"

HR: "OK, here you go".

Back in February, this guy wasn't even in Switzerland, having had his permit not renewed in 2009. Suddenly he's working in Zürich and has a job offer for Basel.

Re: Another Can I Survive on X Salary Question:=)

Just to come back to the original question and to be serious for a second: you (or whoever it is you are posting about) are already earning a huge amount of money (let's say 200K a year including bonus, for the sake of simplicity). Money does not need to be a factor in your job choices at that level; you can focus on more important questions like:
  • Is the job in Basel more interesting than your current job?
  • Do the office environment and atmosphere in the team appear to be pleasant?
  • Would this job leave you more time for family, hobbies, leisure activities?
  • Will those activities be available in Basel, or will you have to travel to get to them ?

... and so on. If the answer to these questions is Yes, then go for it. If the answer is No, then don't.

You just don't want the competition - in the words of Ron and Russel:
"This town ain't big enough for the both of us ...... (and it isn't me who's gonna leave)"

Stephen, .... Stephen .... I wouldn't waste your time with sensible comments, and trying to help - we're way beyond there.

To the OP: In the service of different countries' governments, Tashkent was always seen as a dream posting. I would see if your company has offices here and whether it would be possible for you to transfer. I feel you would be able to maintain a very high standard of lifestyle, and be more than able to fulfil any possible fantasy.

Re: Another Can I Survive on X Salary Question:=)

To be fair, the OP never said he was earning this money, or that he had this job, or had an offer in Basel - he just posted a hypothetical question that he knew would get a flame response, and then replied just the once to hit that magic 10 post count. Since then, radio silence. Ouchboy hit the nail on the head, I suspect.

Put it this way, would you even consider moving to Basel at all?
If I were you; no. I'd be unwelcome.

Im increasingly surprised at the predictability of the reaction to an obvious wind up. The reaction was to jump higher than a bootless cat on the roof of a spanish hacienda in the midday sun of a particuarly hot day in summer!
Its a wind up, ignore the OP.

Re: Another Can I Survive on X Salary Question:=)

Living on less than 1/4 million CHF a year - is barely surviving. I'd consider it the poverty line.

Honestly, do you know how much it costs to get the Aston serviced? Shirts and Suits laundered? Shoes polished? Back, sack and crack waxed?

And lunches at Bindella don't buy themselves.

Re: Another Can I Survive on X Salary Question:=)

I thought perhaps the op didn't consider Basel an International Airport because you could fly with <<boake>> dog rough, common as muck, good ole orangey Easyjet?

Imagine the horror of having to mingle with the general unwashed, (with only your executive "speedy boarding pass" as a way of singling you out as being an important "somebody")...almost as common as, well, boasting about your salary! (You could always get a tee shirt printed with that detail to get the proles to notice you!)

But then International Jetsetter Zurich Airport flies Sleazyjet too doesn't it?

The horror....the horror...is that why you want to move?

It's easy to get to Basel...follow the motorway signs for Karlsruhe....and when you get to Karlsruhe keep going another hour or so and it'll be there somewhere.....

If he is just selling something, everyone should PM him with 'sincere' offers and many questions.
