Where can I find Xylitol?

Coop and Migros don't have it (I was expecting not to have it but I still searched for it there).
I asked at a pharmacy in the village I live and they said they don't have it.
Should try in a big city? I'm spending my weekends in Zurich so maybe there is a place I can find it there? A regular Apotheke should have it...?
Thanks.

Re: Where can I find Xylitol?

Maybe try a Drogerie (which is similar to an Apotheke but generally has more chemicals as well as a natural foods section). You may also want to try asking for it by different names. According to Wikipedia, it also goes by the names Pentahydroxypentane and Xylite.
Good luck!

Re: Where can I find Xylitol?

You have to look at the specialty/health food stores, or pharmacies that have a lot of food products. I never did find it. But that was a few years ago. You might have better luck now.

Re: Where can I find Xylitol?

If you still can't find it here, you could order it through ebay or drugstore.com, which offers international shipping.

I hope I will find it somewhere at a Drogerie as I don't feel comfortable ordering it online. But thanks for the tip .

No problem at all

You can order it on the web, even in Germany and Austria
Don't forget E-Bay

You can get it from about 10€ per 1000 grams :

Re: Where can I find Xylitol?

You should be able to get it at any good Drogerie, possibly a chemist (Apotheke).

Here is the name of the brand:

XYLIT Zuckerersatz (in French: sucre remplacement)

the company: Biosana AG, 3672 Oberdiessbach, www.biosana.ch

It comes in cans à 470g. Any Drogerie should be able to order it for you if it's not available off the shelf. It's quite expensive, however - about CHF 15.00 for a can, iirc.

Re: Where can I find Xylitol?

I don't remember the brand name but there is a very good one available in several flavours in the apotheke on the lower floor (rail city) of HBH Zurich. They are tooth healthy and don't have any nasty additives. It is a small apotheke so it shouldn't take much searching to find even without the brand name. Sorry for the vagueness here

Hi Princessduck

I would recommend this product to you here because it is 100% made from birch wood and not with corn from China. The product is called Xucker®. You can buy it online http://xucker.ch http://xylit-xylitol.ch or http://xylitol-shop.ch

I hope I could help you

Re: Where can I find Xylitol?

Have you tied STEVIA? You have not mentioned what you want it for.

Coop stocks it in the sugar/coffees section. Comes in a couple of different sizes (best selection at a big store).

"With its steviol glycoside extracts having up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar, stevia has garnered attention with the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar food alternatives. Because stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose, it is attractive as a natural sweetener to people on carbohydrate-controlled diets."

Re: Where can I find Xylitol?

Check out http://www.birkenzucker.ch

you can order it online from shop.tautona.ch, in 1kg bags or in packets of 4 or 5 grams. I like the birkenzucker stuff that comes from Finland best. They also have additional products, but I've just been buying the birkenzucker from them.

I've used Stevia and birkenzucker. IMHO, birkenzucker is easier to cook with and has a better taste, but that's a personal opinion. Birkenzucker/xylitol also has no effect on blood sugar (at least not for me).

Re: Where can I find Xylitol?

It is a matter of taste. I find Stevia horrible & to me it has a weird back bitter taste. Xylitol is yummy.

Actually, I saw a study years ago that showed it can lower blood sugar. The good news is that this could make it ideal for some groups of people. But a wee warning - I had a hypoglycemic attack after consuming a drink with stevia and hitting the gym. As long as I have it under other circumstances, I'm fine.

Since I have a massive sweet tooth, I still use it (avoiding it now only b/c I'm pregnant and there was an iffy rat study showing it affected male fertility, although these were large doses). Overall, I've found it to be the only sweetener that doesn't give me headaches or upset my tummy. Great to see it recommended here.

Tip for those who've tried the powder and found it gross: try the liquid! Def is a zillion times more palatable to me.
