I'd use part of it to buy your own place since rent is dead money. I'd invest the rest into something that generates you an income.
Although I think owning a property is a good idea (UK background; it's sort of drilled into us from birth) I don't see rent as "dead money".

Rent is paying for somewhere to live. Like paying for food, or a TV, or a car, or a train ticket. You pay something - you get something.

So you pay rent for 20 years and you get nothing. You pay a mortgage and in the UK you have paid for a house in full. Here you pay for 1/3 of your house by then (if you only paid the minimum).

Buying a home is drilled into us back in Australia. I couldn't image I could afford paying high rents when i'm retired.

I don't know. If you buy a house using a mortgage you're basically renting from the bank. Plus you have to make repairs and pay for repairs yourself

It's all fun and games until you get into negative equity.

Re: Reevaluating my life and need advice please.

Invest 380 k at the best rate you can get, take the other 20 and travel, south america,south-east asia do some trekking in nepal. You have plenty of time and cash to see the world and still have your nest egg when you come back refreshed and maybe with a better idea of what to do. The world is your oyster. Remember that the things you own end up owning you.........

Really appreciate all the replies. One can't travel too much but I have done a lot of that already and ridden lot of motorbikes too.

I think what I am looking for is to maybe settle down and have a proper base in Zurich. I don't mean settle down in the sense of getting married because I really enjoy my independence and not being tied to any one woman. I am bit of a free spirit but by settling down I mean maybe having my own small flat.

The problem is no bank will probably look at me.

Love that place

Re: Reevaluating my life and need advice please.

1 - Move to Bahamas (or another suitable tropical country with no capital gain tax).

2 - Spend 100k learning how to trade during a year or two. Just trial and error, no fancy (and useless) courses.

3 - Use leverage on the 300k left and trade for a living.

4 - Decide what country to buy.

5 - Don't look back.

So you pay rent for 20 years and you get nothing.
You get 20 years of not having to do upkeep and maintenance, repairs, etc.

You also get 20 years of not having to pay income tax on the rental value of your home.

Definitely worth it.

Tom
