People are getting the groans for the character assassination. No one deserves to be singled out and made an "hypothetical" example of by a bunch of crusading higher than thou sorts.

Fine spout as many theories as you want, stay away from the personal stuff.

Otherwise..Get over it

Re: Mountain bike sold on English Forum - etc. ..... QUESTIONS?

Nicolaschulz, like i stated in numerous post already, I did not consider the Bike
being "hot" since the price was not so unreasonable.

There are plenty of things being sold on EF. for much better prices with no receipts and i do not think that is strange. But i def. learned an important lesson and will stick to my goal of becoming a banker...now for this u can grown at me but yeah thats my goal.

And regarding the report, if the owner of the bike wants me to come to help him with the police report i will be happy to assist him.

The OP is still 130chf out of pocket and didn't have to do anything about it, but did.
According to the OP, Yes....but if he paid 50 or 70 CHF....or nothing?

I doubt it was from some sense or moral duty, as the op states he wants to be a banker, a criminal record would put pay to that ambition.

Great, glad I could be useful.

Even with the safest lock you should always use prevention:

-Avoid parking into dodgy places, isolated places, etc...
-Have another lock or chain for the wheels, etc...
-Make sure everytime you lock on a static place. I once saw someone who put the bike on the "stick for the signalisation sign". But that "stick had no top" and it was hardly 2m high. One could just slide the frame and locker up and get the bike unlocked, free! (The wheels where not locked, only the frame to the "stick").
-Avoid those cables locks made of "little cables". It takes a few seconds to cut them with the proper tools.
-use a combination of 2 decent locks (recent kryptonic, not the round one + motorbike chain).
-etc...

I have bought a bike from EF member without any receipts so to say. The American owner has already left the country.
If we sell it, we will again not be able to prove it is not a stolen one!
Asking for a manual/packaging for a second or third hand bike is also not practical.
Well the incident has really stirred some thoughts, how many of us make sure that the stuff we buy is legit?
Some cheap items could simply be “grey" market goods, Had it made a difference, if the whole episode did not involve ‘EF’ and its members?
Anyway it got me thinking, how often do we do checks in our personal capacity?
often if you buy 2nd hand stuff, it will not have original packaging or receipts. you just have to have to trust the person selling it.

Obviously you didn't think so, but I, and I think others in this discussion would have thought it odd as well. A complete stranger, coming up to me and offering me a bike, just because I'm cleaning mine?

If you were to have been investigated for receiving stolen property, while you might well be innocent, you'd certainly have a case to answer, in my view. What would Judge Judy say to your story?

I'd be more careful in future, if I were you! (Not the 130CHF, but the real possibility of being prosecuted for receiving).

On the subject of locks - your lock only has to be more substantial/harder to cut than one used on another bike near to wear you lock it.

It is the same principle as people running from an axe wielding murderer - just don't be the slowest!
